The games we played.

Video games have always been a big part of my life,
growing up i was usually playing them whenever i had the spare time, and that still is true now.
So i decided to make this topic so everyone can talk about the video games they can remember playing when they were kids.

i remember playing games on the n64 like, super mario 64, perfect dark and james bond: golden eye.
about that particular james bond game there was always this level that i was stuck on for a very long time where you had to protect this girl (Natalie i think her name was) from wave after wave of russian soldiers as she tried to hack into their computer mainframes for some reason.
Thinking of it now makes me want to go on ebay, look for a n64 buy it, and then play through all the old games i remember, those were the good days...

those are a few of the early ones at home, of course at the time arcades and video games were becoming prevalent at places like 7-11 so I really spent most of my time on the arcade versions, especially Missile Command & then later Elevator Action.

once i use to play games like Age of Empires for 12 hours straight in a LAN against 8 other people, we would go all day and night then sleep all

COMMODORE 64:

i played the c64, i would sit there playing stuff like Hunt the Wompus, Summer Games, Winter Games, (broke many joysticks that

way) oh and Pacman.


PC 386/486:

Played so many games, all the SSI titles out there, stuff like BBS games. LORD - Legend of the Red Dragon on my 9kbps modem heh.

My favorite was Warlords (Greetings Warlord.) I would invite mates from school over to play and we would play Hotseat meaning each guy would

sit and have a turn then swap.


NINTENDO:

This was a machine i never had, so i would go to a mates and play stuff after school almost every day, until they kicked me out.


SUPER NINTENDO:

I played alot of RPG games and the popular stuff like, Donkey Kong, Mario Kart, Lufia 2, and countless others.

(yes i still have the machine.)


PLAYSTATION:

Again this was RPG heaven, the excitement i had when i loaded Final Fantasy 7 for the first time, i played that for days straight.

Yes and many other memories i cant remember right now :( go figure.

I remember Perfect Dark on the N64. I used to play that game religiously, to the point where I knew exactly how the hardest skill computer opponents would react in a deathmatch game. Lol.

I remember Super Smash Brothers on the N64 too. Waaaaay too much time spent there. . .

And I know it's not as old, but I remember finally playing a Halo game online (Halo 3). Had never done it before, so I was a little nervous. . . First game was Swords in Rumble Pit, beat the round 25 kills, 3 deaths. Felt kinda good. :D Then I got cursed at by the other players, who I swear couldn't have been older than 15. Made me realize exactly, again, why I prefer to play online games while muted. Lol.

Atari 2600 -- dozens of games; asteroids, missle command, raiders of the lost ark, and starmaster stick out in my mind

Ti 99/4A -- Tunnels of Doom and Adventure -- awesome, loading from a tape cassette

PC -- Civilization I, II, and III, some flight and combat simulators, Master of Orion I and II, Hero's Quest I, II, III, and IV (Shadows of Darkness!), Darksun, a civil war game (forget the name, might have been Civil War), Baldur's Gate, Knights of the Old Republic

I started with the first pong game. My Dad and I used to sit on the couch hunched over the console playing it. My Dad, being an engineer, decided that wasn't very good so he took it apart, took the knobs out, and ran wires to heavy cardboard boxes in which he mounted the knobs... wa la we had wired controllers.

Got a Magnavox Odyssey after that... graphics were horrible, but is had the speaking module so my friends and I would type swear words into it and listen to it swear in it's horrible computer voice. I found this in my parents attic last time I was there. I plugged it in and it still worked. The graphics were soooo bad.

Atari 2600 - Pitfall, Missle Command, winter sports

I had a game system called Aquarius (intellivision knockoff) for the simple reason that it had a Advanced D&D game which my buddy and I would stay up all night and play.

Nintendio & Super Nintendo - Legend of Zelda and Excitabike were good. There was a spce game I played alot, but can't remember the name....

Xbox - My last console game... bought mainly for Madden and the Star Wars titles...

Not sure if I'll but another console game.

Anyone else play the old MUDs over telnet? I used to spend hours, to many hours, playing a dragonlance based one. I blame them for my poor grades freshman year of college. Of course I also had a pong machine, atari 2600, commodore 64 and Amiga 500, nintendo...... you get the point. I have been playing video games most of my life I don't know what I would have done without them. Probably made better grades and been in better shape who knows.

You had to go into one of the castles, I think the green or yellow dragon and take the bridge and place it in the dark maze room. then grab the dot and take it to a wall, then when done, it would show you the credits to the game and allow you to kindof teleport to other areas ingame.

I love to remember the old games and how fun that was to get a new game and sit there until you solve it. Of course back then I was very young and didnt have a job or babies, the only thing I had to do was the yard and clean my room.

I belive the first video game I ever played was Pong.

Space Invaders, Pitfall, Frogger, Donkey Kong, Centipede, Burger Time, etc.

I cannot even begin to put a number on the amount of quarters I've fed Contra and PacMan.

Street Fighter. Mortal Kombat. More Mortal Kombat. Even more, Mortal Kombat.

Zelda.

Late Teen's brought about the Playstation...and with it, Resident Evil and Tomb Raider. I believe the majority of my early to mid 20's was spent with Laura Croft. Ha.

The mid 20's area also started the shift from console to PC games. Namely, EQ II. Short stint with WoW at some point in time. A whole bunch of Command and Conquer. Flight Simulator (I used to be convinced I could stop a LJ on an aircraft carrier - never happened though). Civilization IV.

PC - started with MUDS, played for hours, was heavy into FPS for a while, halflife, halflife 2, farcry, jointops, bf, counterstrike etc, oblivion, morrowind etc etc etc

Pong and c64 were my own all the rest of the console systems were purchased for kids (of course I played when they were in bed ;) ) PC games are my own.

Used to own an Internet cafe and at night we'd close the doors, invite a few friends and lan party sat night till sunday night straight through, again mostly fps.. now that was a blast.

Kind of a different experience for this old geezer.

When I was young, the closest thing we had to video games were Pinball machines at the Arcade or Pizza Shop. TV's were just TV's back then. The only computers were at defense installations or major research universities.

When I first got to college I did play some Trek on a VAX with a Huge Decwriter printing out the map every turn. Command line enter some new orders and watch it process and print out the new result.

There were other games with a "maze of twistly tunnels....all alike" that you tried to work yourway through.

I missed the whole Game console age, and went straight to Windows PC's in the early 90's. Mostly RPG type games and a few like Civilization.

We had Pong with the fake wood grain panel gamebox.
I loved Adventure and combat on the Atari 2600. Dangerous ducks chasing you across the screens. I think they were hasted.
The tanks in the maze with the bouncing shots... I remember Atari thumb and the callous on between your thumb and finger.
Dr. J vs. Larry Bird on the Apple IIe. If you broke the backboard the sweeper would come and curse you out!
I had an official D&D game on the Sega Genesis but I don't remember the name but I drew out all of the maps on graph paper.
In College I played Mines of Moria on a VAX running Unix. I didn't go the MUD route though.
Everquest.
Might and Magic (V, VI, VII, VIII?) on the PC.
Panzer General, Allied General, Fantasy General, Age of Empires (II and III anyway.)

Atari - Pitfall, cant remember the others.
Nintendo - everything, I played almost every single game. Elevator Action!!
Saga Master System - Y's, Phantasy Star I...
Saga Genesis - Phantasy Star II, III, IV...
Turbo Graphix 16 - Strange games, I remember Bonk and some RPG...

Virtual Boy - Had my bike stolen while I played some silly game. (Got my bike back!)

Computer - KAOS MUD, DOOM, EQ I spent over a year of my life logged in, that is over 365 days of play time when I typed /time. Well over two years of actual time, I left right before the Planes of Power expansion. Counter-Strike! Now it is DDO!!

Arcade - Bump and Jump!!! (My favorite game of all time), Street Fighter II, Street Fighter II Tournament Edition, Rush-n-attack, Mortal Kombat I, II, III, Killer Instinct (favorite Fighting game), Time Killers, Time Cop, to many.

I've logged a major portion of my life playing video games, I have probably spent more time playing video games than living... sad, I know. But I have great hand-eye coordination!!! Woohoo! Twitch skills FTW!

Still play a few MUDS, and have my ZMud Client loaded on 3 machines :D The only "active" mud I still play from years back is one based on "Magic: the Gathering" Alpha/Beta/Unlimited sets. I don't play Magic anymore but I Still have all my Mox's.

first console was a Ti-99/4A - and the only game I had was hunt the wumpus and mountain climber. all the other games, I had to program myself.
had an Apple II in my classroom in 1st grade. played a pacman clone on that one, and turtle if you count that as a game :(

My favorite memory is from the good 'ol C64 and the game Ultima 3.

My friends and I had a "hacked" version. We had no manuals, nothing. It took us weeks to figure out things like the spell components - it was a blast.

At one point we could not advance the game ... couldn't figure out why. After weeks of frustration, one of my friends "hit" the (1) whirlpool in the game by mistake and let the computer keep running (normally we would just turn it off and re-start because the screen went black and the drive silent). After 10 secs of silence or so, the drive whirled alive and he was in the next part of the game in order to advance it.

My earliest memories was playing pong/tennis/hockey on an oddessy in 1974 at my baby sitters house (I was like 8).

Then in 78 working at 'castle park' arcade as an attendent and just playing everything that came out.

Missile command was pretty cool and so was the 2 and 4 man football machines.
Bezerker rocked (a pre cursor to robotron). Not many remeber berzerker.
OF course asteroids and space invaders were the big ones at first. And Galaxian was around 79 also I think.

Early ones like the one where you and a friend were cowboys and had to hit each other were a blast. The wagons and stuff were shot away like the bases in space invaders. (man this post is bringing back memories.)
God, remember the 3d/2d battlezone...cool!

That year so many games came out. Many became the cult favorites and many just disappeared into oblivian, but as an employee at an arcade I really got to try them all out.

In the 80s they started to experiment with seats that moved when you played and that was always a cool experience.

First video RPG...what was its name? IT was pretty cool..came out when joust did. Up to 4 could play it and you went from level to level killing things with your bows and stuff. That was cool (and tough).


Coolest experience ever was in the late 80s when they developed a game inside of a gyroscope. It was a flight/fighter simulator and you could fly upside down (physically) and sideways. Only thing missing was feeling the G's you were pulling.
5 bucks to play that one...and the lines were long.

First PC computer video games (after pong)...ah memories...circa 1979

TRS80 - the 2 dimensional lunar lander. Incredible (later was a video game too)
Apple invaders (like space invaders, on on the apple)

OoTOPOS - we never had the documentation for it, but we played that sucker all the time. "A smile leaps to its 4 lips and kisses you"

Lemonade stand and Hammurabi- text based money making games. Uh oh rain today, sales of lemonade down 60%, you now have 20 bucks in reserve. lol



The big thing in the early 80s was the 'Laser disc' games....one was even a 3d hologram. They never made it, they were not that good, but really cool to check out.

Notables of my era were centipede, robotron, donky kong, missile command and about 500 up and commers...so many memories...

Breakout was everywhere too.

From wikipedia, top games by year (golden age of video arcade games). For you youngsters, at this time if you were a teen you went to arcade palaces and spent everything. Not many had computers and could afford the games, this was the way it was. We used to play in snow up to our heads for hours, with no shoes, it was a tough time.

Space Invaders - was cool...and really hard after a few boards.

1979

Asteroids - The first chaos game...totally crazy if you blew everything up!
Galaxian - we thought of it as an advanced space invaders, and it stayed around for a long time.
Lunar Lander - well, it was so sci-fi, it was fun.

1980

Battlezone - first game I remember ever had a cool interface (a 'real tank' viewer to put your head up to!)
Berzerk - This game was awesome. And the bouncing happy face (otto?) would attack you if you took too long.
Centipede - Another good chaos game once it sped up.
Defender - Awesome chaos game, hyperspace...oh cool!!!
Missile Command - the cold war on a lunar surface. Star wars defense at its best.
Pac-Man - I hate that fricking game.
Phoenix - meh
Star Castle -meh
Tempest - insane game, made no sense, but developers went into a graphical weirdness at this time.

Robotron 2084 - you had me at hell0, the ultimate chaos game.

robotron = ownage, best video game ever, i was only introduced to it like 2 years ago but heck is it fun,
my step father owns an arcade thingy of it

Pong - Not sure why this was so much fun but it was.

Atari 2600 - Pitfall Harry was da man. Nobody swings a vine like him. The original "Indiana Jones". Also had all the classics and had the Space Shuttle simulator with the console overlay.

PC - Microsoft Flight Simulator. John Elway's Quarterback.

Atari 5200 - Junk. Better graphics but the controllers stunk. Liked my 2600 better.

NES - Genghis Khan, Final Fantasy, and Super Mario Bros. series. Oh, and Contra, and Metal Gear and a slew of others. Fun system.

Sega Genesis - Mortal Kombat. Too many nights of gettin drunk playing this over and over with my friends.

PC - Ultima, Wing Commander, Air Warrior, Mech Warrior, Doom, Hexxen, etc. Original Neverwinter Nights on Aol.

Playstation - Resident Evil. Still hooked on that game. Last console though.

PC - Air Warrior II, III, IV. Star Wars series of games. Warbirds. Microsoft Combat Flight Simulator and regular Flight Simulator. NWN & NWN2. Aces High & Aces High II. Knights Online. Warrock. America's Army.

Probably forgot a few dozen others. :)

First video RPG...what was its name? IT was pretty cool..came out when joust did. Up to 4 could play it and you went from level to level killing things with your bows and stuff. That was cool (and tough).

I think you are thinking of Golden Axe. The arcade version had 4 different characters you could play from different joysticks. Of course the dwarf was the only one worth playing. :)

Anyone remember Wizardry? I used to play that at a friend's who had an (original?) IBM that must have weighed 300 lbs.

I used to play this baseball game on my c64 with this relief pitcher named Pepi Perez - never forgotten it and man, did he have a nasty slider!

God yes lol!! I started with Gemstone III, then I moved to a friends game called "Aarchon" I still play, and have remorted 5 times now :) Never really gets old!

It's called "Gorrillas" heh. Its an BASIC game. If you have an old computer you probably have it and don't know it. Search for *.BAS, load up basic, open gorrillas or nibbles (also fun) and hit run, your monkey will be tossing banana bombs in no time.

My first system (of my own, neighbor had C64) was the original Nintendo.

My mom took me out and said I could get one game, I picked The Legend of Zelda.

That's all I played for the first 6 months I owned that system, never even opened Super Mario Bros. :confused:

When I went over to friends houses, I was always the one stuck on like World 1-2 and ran out of guys first. :(




Anyways, I noticed a bunch of people here mentioning both NWN and Diablo, load up NWN, pick internet game and look for a server called Hometown. Somebody took the time to design a server based on Diablo, it's a singular town with a 13+level dungeon. Very fun!

The upside of having a very nice upbringing is that we had 1 arcade machine in the house and 3 pinballs in the entertainment room. the arcade was Galaga/Galaxian, and the pinballs were "comet" early 80's "pinbot" mid 80's and "Beat the clock" late 60's

Auto Duel on the Apple IIe is still to date my favorite game of all time.

Studios have tried to redo it a bunch of times since then, but it never seemed to quite come together. Even attempted and MMO (AutoAssault), but i heard it flopped.

Man i loved that game....

The Apple II - the game I remember from that was Castle Wolfenstein. Not the later "reinvented 3D ****.

I've been gaming since the great days of teh Atari 2600 (loved Adventure, Phoenix, and Pitfall best). It's been really amazing to watch video games evolve from the stick figures of the old days to the full motion 3D animation of games today.

Anyone remember the Sega Genesis D&D game Warriors of the Eternal Sun? As fast and easy as that game was, I still loved it. The Eye of the Beholder series was also a wonderful set of games.

hehe that was part of DOS 5. There was also a game with snake like things you had to move around the screen without touching himself anywhere.

That reminded me of a few games I played on that old IBM machine like the original DOOM (1 diskette) or DOOM 2. Anyone remember the original DUNE for PC.. it was the first of games like startcraft etc that followed.
