So here I am all excited and giddy and all to play DDO on my new rig last night.
After the marathon download and install and updates I am finally ready to go.
I log in and with the new power to my new system I am amazed by the graphics I am getting, I mean 150 frames epr second on Very high graphics and 60 frames per second on Ultra High, Very Nice.
Then I get my first error:
Cannot connect to general chat..... I think little of this because general chat has been buggy for a bit and soemtimes it works and sometimes it does not.
So I join a party last night.
Voice chat is enabled but it "appears" I am the only one with voice chat. I am assured I am not by the group members so I figure if I relog it will solve my problem. It does not.
At this time for me, Voice chat is broken, I cannot read or post in group chat or guild chat and I have no General chat.
Turbine this is an MMO, I particularily like to communicate with my fellow players and at this point I am relegated to TELLS only.
This is not acceptable.
Help me help you keep a customer because not having the ability to communicate effectivly in game is a dealbreaker for me.

Guildie had the same problem, I think he had to call customer service to help him out tho.

Um, I'm sure Turbines tech team will be glad to help you get the settings right, but it's not the development teams responsiblity if your new computer, which was built for you, doesn't quite work with DDO.
I'm sure you will get it working though.

Perhaps it is a development issue for the future, but you can't fully play now, so I think that's what Dane and Merc are getting at.

well if a mod wants to throw this in the right forum, i am not opposed. I dont want to create a second thread though and get them both locked for "spamming" the forums.
Congratz on your new machine, Cowdenicus. I suspect that this is nothing more than a birthing pain in getting your new baby up and running. I have heard of someone with this problem before as well, and I hope that CS will be able to help you without too much delay. Don't get too discouraged, obviously being unable to use any chat channels is a serious issue but you'll get past it, though I know that this is but one of many computer troubles you've had lately.

That's rubbish. It's not his PC. I have this issue from time to time, and I have been using the same PC since beta. I also have an issue where if I log a toon, minimize the window, then maximize and re-log the same toon I have no chat capabilities at all (no general, guild, or voice...just tells). The issue the OP is talking about happened to me two nights ago. It's the game, not his system.

don't know if it is his system.....
Cupcake just posted a thread with this same issue, and I too have experienced it running XP.
no general chat, no guild chat, little sound things on names turned off.
I've had it happen multiple times. I fix it by logging off and exiting game. Logging back in with different toon, then logging off again and logging in desired toon.
Seems to work for me,

Yeah, it's a Vista problem. Had the same thing happen to me with my new computer. I had to go into the .ini file and specify a port location. Luckily it's a pretty easy problem to fix as long as you know what to do.

It works exactly like that for a lot of people. I have two rigs, one with Vista, and one with XP... my Vista machine, despite being newer and better in all aspects (other than not having XP) absolutely will not connect to chats in game, no voice chat, no party chat, no guild chat. I've been over and back with ingame and forum techincal support... and have reverted to simply playing on my XP machine.
It's more than a technical issue when it affects more than a handful of people.

Its not when the issue apears in an Unsupported OS.
TUrbine most likely will not officially provide this info because they do not support Vista right now. This happens every time a new OS is realeased..... Especially when the new OS is inferior to the old one (Exact same thing happened to numerous games when Millenium was realased... That was WOrse than what we have right now with Vista/XP)

Yeah, not supporting the OS that is preloaded on between 80 and 85% of todays new computers is definitely the way to go.

Umm Ok I kind of see your point about it being an unsupported OS, but it is "the" Microsoft OS it is not going away it is the one being installed in all new computers by the major manufacturers unless you special order with xp from the company, so IMHO someone from the game company might want to look into the problems people are experiencing with the OS an put up a message about it and how to fix it or a link to it in FAQ about bugs.

Blue and Liam....
You guys dont recall the 98 to Millenium Transistion do you? Some games in that era never addressed the Millenium "Upgrade" just like consumers never embraced that OS. Vista is on the EXACT same track right now. Businesses are reverting back to XP and an exponential rate right now. Dell Still ofers many models with XP rather than Vista (Compare this to the Millenium/XP Transition which ME was halted within 3 months of XP's launch)
Microsoft has even delayed the XP termination date.
As soon as Turbine starts posting official Vista Patches or Fixes, they are sucked into supporting this OS. If they are smart, they will let this slide for quite some time. We have a LOT of people around here that understand the issues and are more than willing to help the Vista-ites out.
Vista is the most problmatic "upgrade" since ME...... If the game wasnt designed with Vista AND XP in mind from the get go, Updating hte game engine to full compatability is painful.
We need the devs working on CONTENT.... Not vista allocation tables and port security.

I am truly trying to understand the nature of this so please bare with me because my knowledge of computer programming is basic literally that is all I ever looked at make a bug go across the screen on a tandy with a cassette player as the drive no floppies yet. That in mind you are saying that turbine would have to do something to the machines they have to make it work better with Vista, which I agree would be a terrible waste of dev time, as a community many problems have been solved by others and maybe that is how it should be.

Many of the "improvements" Microsoft made in Vista that attempted to address security issues that currently exist with XP, have rendered the software code as it is currently written for games and XP no longer work as intended. Normal routes to access features of the computer or internet are now blocked by default. Unless you change some of the OPERATING system settings in VISTA, the current program like DDO will not be succesful in accessing specific resources on your computer needed to play the game as written. Going back and rewriting core coding is fraught with Peril serious Peril and risks serious borkage.
I recall ME, and life around the turn of the millenium. Win 95SE stayed on my systems if at all possible. There is a fix to the issues experienced by Cow et al, but it does not change the game settings or code, it changes the operating system restrictions and settings to permit DDO to still access the computer resources it currently can access in XP. Being able to access those resources is part of what the security vulnerabilities are related to in XP that were being closed down in Vista.
Seriously if that fix has worked, take it and run and forget the whole thing.....:)

No... Not everyone supports Vista. Why? Because Vista changed all the rules. Something as simple as where you should have the data files save has changed in Vista. Permissions have been changed in Vista. There are so many changes that you really have to shake down your software to be sure it is compatible with Vista. Ours is -now- but it just became so and we are still picking bones out of our teeth and finding little tiny things no one could have foreseen.

Hmmmm.... Wading into dangerous territory there..... Maybe by making it look like a general windows misconfig (very rarely would this ever happen in XP.. if ever) they get around "Supporting" Vista.....
