Ok...I remember being new to the game...
I remember getting no response to the first question I dared ask here and getting no response...then flamed...then told to explain why I couldn't understand...

uh.

So..
A new game.
Answer a Newbie Question
Ask a Newbie Question...

Like ask a st...question get an answer.

Let us ask all those questions we needed to know when we were afraid to ask...but addicts like us know the answer to.

It might help get info to the new without forcing them to ask..and fear us.

the red swirly thing indicates that you have been cursed and is now suffering from its effects (-4 to all rolls). it does not have a timer and can be removed by:

1. brothers and sisters in inns

2. remove curse potions

3. remove curse wands

4. remove curse spell

its a good practice to carry remove curse clickies so that the non-casting type can also activate the spell from the item. it also help saves plat

I had to ask this one on my first and only wizard. Only had created fighter types.

Where do I get spell components at?

The General Vendors in the houses have them, as well as the (forgot the name shop) in the harbor. They can also be had in the Market Place Bazaar

If it's a blue icon that looks like a scary face... then you my friend are feared!

A cleric's Remove Fear spell will take care of that for ya, but youshould make it a habit to carry a couple Remove Fear Potions as well, so you can just drink one whenever you are afraid and be able to do stuff again!

So just what does 'ww' and 'stk' in an LFM mean?

Vordax

Market bazaar tent...is straight across from the entrance to the market (when you first get there from the harbor).
Just cross the little bridge past the level 3-5 trainers and go under the flaps...

Why cant I sell my stuff? I have a bunch of gear I do not want but the vendors will not take it.
It is only slightly used, so why can't I sell it?

Hitting on enemies always has a chance of giving temporary damage to your weapons. Every once in a while you should visit a vendor (not a barkeep), and use the "repair" tab to repair your equipment.
Repairing equipment removes all temporary damage, but also has chance to give permanent damage (shown in red on the durability bar): the more temporary damage an item had, the more likely you will receive permanent damage (click here (http://ddo.enterwiki.net/page/Repair_%28equipment%29) if you want full details).

Note to new players: oozes damage weapons a lot, either use a muckbane, a weapon of everbright or a cheap club (the muckbane and everbright should not get damage, while the cheap club can be easily replaced).

Why cant I sell my stuff? I have a bunch of gear I do not want but the vendors will not take it.
It is only slightly used, so why can't I sell it?
There are a few reasons why you may not be able to sell an item:
- the item has temporary damage - you need to repair it first (see above)
- the item is locked in your inventory - unlock it first
- the item is marked as "starter" item - this is a newbie item, you can just destroy it if you don't need it anymore
- the item is a collectible or quest item - these cannot be sold
- you are talking to a broker, who buys only a specific category of items in a specific price range
That's all I can think of right now.

a wizard can learn all level appropiate spells. open up your spell book, if you see a spell on a scroll which you do not have you can inscribe it into the spell book. how do i learn then? you need inscription materials highlight the scroll in your target orb. click on the "inscribe spell" icon. if you do not have the icon set up, go to your feats, click and drag it into your hotbar.

but..... what is an inscription material?

Newbie Reply - What is a CLW? CMW? CSW? Huh?

Better answer: Wands come in Cure Light, Cure Moderate and Cure Serious Wounds (CSW). CLW and CMW can be bought in the Marketplace Bazzar tent. CSW are found in "Object Desire" in House Jorasco.

Why? Total Newbies are not likely to know all the little abbreviations that are used. That is one thing that confused and aggravated the **** out of me. "STK?" would come in on a tell. "W.T.F." was my reply. "How about TR?" - WHAT? Where?

If you hear the "You can't leave until you free arlos and gather your party safely in this hallway" at the end of the quest, well, its a bug, I think. Or it is a feature to remind you that you don't actually get the XP until EVERYONE is actually in the hallway. You have freed Arlos. Why the "DM" voice says you haven't is beyond me. If the completion box is checked and the XP flashes up, you are done. Finish out.

A. Inscription Material is an item that is needed in order to inscribe spells into your spellbook. Think of it as a quill and ink that need be purchased. Having used the items to inscribe a spell into your spellbook, the Inscription Material is used up. Fortunately, you can buy them in bulk off the General Vendor in House P. (Walk in the door to house P, take a left, go up a slight grade, take a right ... General Vendor is about 3 or 4 doors down on the left. If you get to a bridge ... you've gone too far. Not sure where House P is? Why ... that's another question.) There are other places to buy them, like the Portable Hole, but House P should be able to meet all your Inscription Material needs ... for at least the time you consider yourself a noob.

Q. What's a/the Portable Hole?

A. The Portable Hole is a magical place that you can't get to from here. What I mean is that it's requires a magical teleport spell to get you there. Mid level (10 to 11-ish) casters can take that spell as one of their 5th level spells, or anybody that has a high enough UMD (Use Magic Device) score can cast it off a scroll. It's basically a tavern, with several shops that sell scrolls and spell components and other assorted caster specific goodies. It also houses a mailbox, INSIDE a tavern... so when you get your caster high enough you can read your mail and get back spell points at the same time.

Q. How do I use a scroll?

[[[Remember people, you're supposed to ANSWER a question before you can ask a new one.]]]

Q. How do I use a scroll?

A. To use a scroll the best way is to simply place the scroll in an empty spot on one of your action bars. Clicking on the scroll once will place the scroll in your hand, clicking on the scroll again will use the scroll.

Now succeeding in using a scroll is reliant on a few factors. If you are attempting to use a scroll that can normally be casted by the class of character you are playing then the spell will succeed automatically if you are of the proper level to cast the spell, if the scroll is a spell that can be casted by your class at some point but you are not high enough level to know that spell yet then instead a caster level check will be made (Most scrolls are set to be able to be casted 2 levels before you actually are able to learn them from leveling up ie. a level 5 spell usually needs you to be at least level 9 to learn but the scroll minimum level is actually 7).

Now if you are tryin to use a scroll that is not part of your casting class then a Use Magic Device (UMD) Check is called for. UMD is a skill that will need to be invested in greatly to be able to use properly. The formula for UMD on a scroll is a base of 20 then add 4 for each new level of spell so a level 1 scroll is 20 and lvl 2 scroll is 24 then 28 and so on and so forth. When you attempt to use a scroll with UMD a dice roll is made and if the roll is equal or above the Difficulty Check (DC) of the scroll then you will succeed, if it is a arcane spell then spell failure also applies.

A. As a general rule Feats stack with enhancements that stack with items, but feats generally do not stack with feats (unless specified) and the same for items and items, or enhancements with enhancements.

Q. Why is Vanash the bestest Cleric EVER?

Q: Why are people asking if I want to "Farm it?"
A: Farming is a term some players use to describe running a quest over and over for some reward. Sometimes it is lewt (also loot and stuff). Sometimes it is for XP (experience points). Sometimes it is for a rare named item such as a Ring of Rage, Sword of Pain or a Muckbane... If you join them expect to run the quest multiple times...Learn the quest fast, and possibly get bored.
*Note: Just because a party member gets one of what they are farming, doesn't mean he/she.../it won't go again and again in hopes of getting a few more.

Q: I've searched all over and have a lesser reptile bane weapon, but I can't find a Muckbane weapon anywhere. Where do I get one?
Yvonne the N00b has aletered her statement....as it was incorrect.

A: Muckbane spawns (drops, appears, is looted from chests) only in Durk's Got a Secret....and Muckdoom in The Pit.
They are in a specific chests in the quests that only appear when a certain monster is present, and then only rarely.
The term "Muckbane" with a capital letter is a lesser ooze bane club made out of glass and is highly desirable due to its
resistance to ooze destructive effects. "Muckdoom" is ooze bane (one step up from lesser ooze bane). Muckbane is often farmed (ease of quest, does not require completion first, ease in killing his owner Muck, only one trap, fewer troglodyte shawmen).

A: Bonuses stack with other type bonuses, not same type bonuses. Enchantment Bonus stacks with Enhancement, Inherent, Armor, Feat and Deflection bonuses. It will not stack with another Enchantment Bonus. Also, Armor bonus does not stack with Armor Bonus ; Deflection does not stack with Deflection... etc.

Q: I have feather fall on an item, but I always drop like a stone...and that hurts. What am I doing wrong? Also, what do the numbers on its icon mean?

A: You have a Clickie. Which is an item with the numbers on it's icon - which mean how many times you can use it before it's 'charges' have to be reset by resting at a shrine or in a tavern. You have to "Click" on the item (usually good to have it in a hotbar slot) to activate the spell-like effect, which will usually have a time-limit on it.

Q: I was on a quest and they asked, "You can't port to Ungarz?" What is porting and how do I do it?
"Porting" is a shortcut for "teleporting". Ungurz is the hobgobelin who bestows the quest series known as Tangleroot (TR).
In order to "port" to him, you need to have talked to him at least once before on this character (if you haven't yet, you need to walk to him). Then you can talk to the guy hanging in the middle of the Tangleroot gorge tavern and he will teleport you automatically to Ungurz.

Not quite true... I've also had a muckbane drop from Bronkarz's chest (the named wolf in The Kobolds New Ringleader). I've doofed over Bronkarz numerous times and until then I'd never seen it drop, so I assume its pretty rare. Anyone else had it drop in Kobolds Ringleader?Sorry, but I'd have to see a screen shot to believe it.

And it's Muck's Doom that drops in The Pit, from the chest in the lava pit after unlocking and killing the Avatar of Juiblex (no, not Jubilex; it's Juiblex).

Q: I have feather fall on an item, but I always drop like a stone...and that hurts. What am I doing wrong?

There are two types of items that have a feather fall effect: an item "of Feather Fall" and a "Featherfalling" item.

An "of Feather Fall" item must be activated to work, has a duration of about a minute and has a number uses (charges) before you have to recharge it at a tavern or a shrine (thats what the small number in the bottom right corner is, it'll count down to 0 as you use the charges).

To recharge it, you can stand around in a tavern for a couple of minutes til the charges come back (you'll hear a swooshy-tinkly sound and see a bright, smoky effect around you) or you can rest at a shrine.

This type of item is also called a "clickie" (because you have to click on it to activate it) and comes in 1 charge, 3 charge and 5 charge varieties. Many spells are available in clickie form, not just feather fall.

A "Featherfalling" item is a continuous effect that lasts as long as you have the item equipped.

A feather fall item is a lot less useful than a featherfalling item because you have to remember to use it before you jump off things and its duration isn't long enough to be really useful. Plus, featherfalling items are common enough that you can find them in chests, end rewards and auctions without too much trouble.

The minimum level you can use a plain featherfalling item is 5 unless you're lucky enough to pick up an item with a "restricted race" requirement, in which case its 4 (or you pick up the named item called the Ring of Feathers that has a minimum level of 1, drops in The Halls of Shan-To-Kor). Featherfalling items are usually boots but some named items also have the effect; e.g. mummified bat, cape of the roc, ring of feathers.

if so it must be uber-rare... I think there's a possibility you are mistaken.... (and if not, then my apologies for doubting you)

There are some really good reasons to run that quest though... a Light Fortification belt, some named daggers i think.... good for lowbie use.. and mad XP.

Q: What is fortification and why do i want it

Polsih
11-15-2007, 07:30 PM
A. Fortification, as it applies to you, is your percentage chance to resist a Critical Hit. So, it basically goes like this ... Monster swings at you and connects ... if the number they rolled was high enough, they get a chance at a Critical Hit on you. Critical Hits add either 2x, 3x or 4x normal damage on top of the damage of a normal hit to you. They hurt a lot more than a regular hit and make your screen flash red to alert you that you just had an "Ouchie!"

Anyway, Here's where your fortification comes in, if you have none or 0% ... BOOM! You've just been Critically Hit (hope you aren't a Squishy)!!! If you have Lesser Fortification you have a 25% chance of making a save and NOT being Critically Hit. If you have a Moderate Fortification item on, you get a 75% chance of resisting the Critical Hit. A Heavy Fortification item will grant you a 100% chance of resisting the Critical Hit (aka, Immunity to Critical Hits).

Warforged [WF] are an exception to the above as they get a natural resistance to critcal hits of 25%. So, Lssr Restoration items grant them 50% (25% + 25%) resitance; Moderate Restoration grants them 100% (25% + 75%) resistance; and, a Heavy Fort item would grant them 125% resistance. That is 25% overkill for today's game, but that could change in the future should monsters be granted the ability to reduce our fortification via weapons or spells. But, I digress. And, I type too long!

Q. What is this "Squishy" that some people speak of?

Q. What is this "Squishy" that some people speak of?

Squishy means that your character has a low armor class or low HPs. A caster is generally 'squishie' also some Rogues and Rangers... generally Fighters or Paladins or Clerics are NOT squishie because they have Heavy Armor, maybe a Shield, and a fair amount of HPs... Barbarians are not squishie due to their extremely high HPS, even thoguh they often have a low AC and no shield.

the term squishie comes from 'you get squished by bad guys easily'.

If you are a squishie, the aforementioned Fortification items will be helpful to you, as well as False Life items, Protection items, and other things that help to mitigate damage or make you able to take more damage. Oh, and try to stay out of the fighting :).

Q: How come sometimes when i hit a monster the damage numbers are red, sometimes yellow, and I think there might be other colors too! What's up with that?

A: The creature you are giving the smack down to is resistant to your actions...Perhaps he has on fire resistance and you are using a flaming weapon....
The creature may have a different weapon he preferrs to be hit with. Try switching between piercing, blunt, slashing weapons and see if these numbers do not go back to red..

Most creatures can be hit with acid. Acit is the MOB cureall.

Q: I am leveling up my wizard and it says I get a class feat. How come I can only pick Meta magics? I have extend and do not want others...

A: some classes get 'class feats' in addition to their regular feats.... fighters for example get a ton of these... they are basically 'bonus' feats, but you have to pick off of a specific list. As a wizard you will be able to pick up most of the metamagic feats this way.

Maximize and Empower are great damamge boosters (for when you need to drop soemthing fast), and heighten can be handy for getting your spells to land when it's important that they land.
