View Full Version : Question on Mob damage resistance mechanics

Does mob DR “carry over” to subtract from effect damage after subtracting from the physical (slash, pierce, etc) damage?
For instance, if I attack a skellie with DR 10/bludgeon using a +3 Flaming Rapier of Pure Good and hit for 7 points of pierce damage (which is absorbed, doing no damage), what happens next regarding the skellies DR? Does it then subtract 0, 3, or 10 from the fire and good damage?
If using the scenario above but attacking a Flesh Golem with DR 10/adamantine, would the net damage result be the same?
Lastly, what is the typical DR of elite-difficulty mobs in Gianthold and Orchard quests? (I’m not asking for an exact and complete list here, as I know that would be really difficult, just looking for an “in general” number, such as “most are around 20”.

DR only reduces physical damage. All weapon effect damage are applied normally unless the mob has energy resistance (eg., Mummies in the desert cast Protection from Fire on themselves). So the Flaming of Pure Good in your example would do 1d6 + 1d6 damage.
On elite, look for DR in the 10/15/20 range. It's best to figure out how to bypass the DR and not to try and power your way through it.

Thanks Mad B. BTW, I really appreciated your Reaver breakdown as well.
My confusion stems from trying to analyze the DR of Flesh Golems in the orchard last night. I was getting no damage from Pure Good, True Chaos, Shock, Frost or Fire. I still don't know what to make of it. Transmuting and maiming were the only things netting me damage, and paltry damage at that.

Bane or Untyped (maiming/viscous) work normally.
Immunity to Magic (Ex)
A flesh golem is immune to any spell or spell-like ability that allows spell resistance. In addition, certain spells and effects function differently against the creature, as noted below.Similarly, Iron and Clay Golems are immune to alignment based damage.
P.S. Reaver breakdown? Not sure if that was me. But if it was me, you're welcome! :)

Oops, that was MrCow. I believe it was one of your rogue breakdowns that I found so valuable.
