View Full Version : Build frustration: Am I trying to do too much with too little?

Having re-thought this build four or five times, and always feeling I'm coming up short, I hereby leave my first post, and open it for scrutiny and ridicule. Perhaps you can iron out some of the wrinkles, or perhaps save me from investing a lot of time into a poor idea. With three other builds I'm currently trying to get capped, I fully expect to be still leveling when they increase the cap to 16. Planner data included to 14.

Theory: Dragonmarked Halfling Heals, Rogue ability, Bard buffs, two-weapon finesse fighting.

Conundrums:
**8 Bard/6 Rogue, which gives me Way of the Mechanic, Or 9 Bard/5 Rogue? I chose 9/5 to get three third level spells: Good Hope, Haste, and Displacement. Also, 9 Bard yields Inspire Greatness and longer spell duration. I'm open to arguments to the contrary.
**Extend spell, Improved Crit, or Improved Two Weapon Fighting? I have room for two of the three.
**Also, I didn't really want two fighter levels, but didn't see another way to get the combat feats I wanted. I don't expect this build to be brutal, but don't want a complete pansy, either.
**With the AC and HP I've calculated, will I spend half my time as a soulstone?

Already in Inventory: +1 Tomes of INT and STR, +6 Charisma ring, +6 Intelligence Goggles, +4 Mithral Chain Shirt, +5 Items for everything, one spare Planar Gird, and a multitude of piercing finesse weapons including greater bane and wounding/puncturing pair. Equipment included below is generally already on hand or readily obtainable. I'm not opposed to having to work a bit to collect equipment, though, so let's shoot for the stars a bit.

WHy focus on Dragonmarks when your playing a Healing capable build? Are you planning on being Primary healer in a quest along with everything else?

Seems to me the best way to take advantage of the healing dragonmark is if you have EMpower Healing as a feat as well.... Otherwise its no different than using a wand or scroll... WHich are plentiful.

Yeppers, no point in taking healing marks and bard at the same time unless you are shooting to be a super duper healing bard, and in that case all that other stuff would have to go anyway.

considering your starting int and all that you probably don't need more than 2 rogue levels to have decent skills, but your dipping into some of the non core skills so extra levels does help with that. You also don't need quite that much dex although it doesn't hurt certainly.

So basicaly I'd simplify a bit, drop the dragon marks, focus on bard levels, keep the combat stuff about the same.

I agree with the other posters, if you want to cast Heal as a Bard, go get some scrolls. I would drop the Dragonmarks, focus on the Rogue abilities/combat, and you should be fine. I would say to lower the number of Rogue levels, probably to 2. Any more than that, and you're diluting the Bard abilities.

As far as why... I thought the dmark healing would supplement the lackluster Bard healing, since the spellpoint pool would be low and largely devoted to buffing. I think, over all, it's probably a little too soft to let this build cross the street by itself.

I could also do essentially the same thing with Drow, except 10 Bard/5 Rogue/1 Fighter. It would start with 16 CHA and 8 WIS, instead of 14 CHA and 10 WIS like the Halfling did. The Drow version would have better HP and SP, pretty much same skills and to-hit. The big difference would be feats, replacing the 3 Dragonmarks of Healing with Toughness added in and an undecided selection for level 15, possibly Greater TWF or Mental Toughness, Nimble Fingers, Enchantment or a Skill Focus. It still risks swift death if I don't play it well, I suppose.

Anyway, a big thanks to Impaqt, sigtrent, and Geonis for amazingly fast responses. Even without the Dragonmarks, I may still go Halfling, so as not to birth another Drow, but I appreciate the advice. Anyone else who has comments may feel free to add them, since it's still a work in progress.

A bard that wants to be a good healer will certainly not be lackluster at it. If spellpoints are an issue (my bard hasn't found it so, since it's offensive spells & not heals/buffs that really eat up spellpoints), can always throw in a sorc level &/or take Spellsinger (probably the easiest bard specialization enhancement to qualify for, since the requirements are things a bard often wants anyway). My 8/1 bard/sorc spellsinger has over 800 sp even though she started with a lackluster 14 cha (that's more SP than the pure wizard with the 20-something int she regularly runs with). The sorc level (if you go that route) also lets you use all wiz/sorc wands with no UMD check, which can be handy for repairing warforged & some buffing, at least at lower levels before UMD is as high as it can get.

Now, don't take my comment above wrong, Bards can be great Healers, but they don't need Dragonmarks to do it.

Bard -40% Wand/Scroll enhancement
Bard -UMD=40 ( 17 ranks + 10 Cha + 3 item + 4 Grtr Hero + 3 Skill Focus + 2 Rogue Skill Boost + 1 Focusing Chant)
Heal scroll - UMD DC-40 (No fail)

11th Caster Level x 10 pts per CL = 110 HPs/cast
add
40% (44 HPs) - 40% Wand/Scroll enhancement
________________

154 HPs per Heal scroll
which thanks to great Haggle skill are extremely cheap.

As far as the "Not going Drow", just don't go Dwarf. The last thing we need in Stormreach is another Dwarf "Battle-Bard"!!!!!

Well, I decided to go Drow; though, I took one out of the world so this one could be born. =) I've decided I'll be perfectly fine with just enough healing for myself and for emergencies. Besides, I've got a level 11 pure bard and two clerics at 14 and 9. As for "battle-bard", I think this will play more like "rogue-who-brought-his-own-buffs," plus Fascinate, and ending Charisma of 26 for the occasionally serviceable spell.

While it seems quite a different character from what I originally had envisioned, I'm actually pretty excited to play it.

For those following along at home, my current plan is below. Thanks once again.

Have you considered going with the Warchanter line. You would need to take a weapons focus instead of weapons finess - for drow take piercing.

Warchanter
Prereqs: Bard level 6, Bard Inspired Attack 1, Bard Inspired Damage 1, Bard Inspired Bravery 2, Power Attack, Any one of the following: Weapon Focus: Slashing, Weapon Focus: Piercing, Weapon Focus: Bludgeoning

Your studies into war have granted you a +2 bonus to your Intimidate skill. Your Inspire Courage song gains an additional +1 to attack rolls, +2 to damage rolls, and +1 to fear saves. If you possess the Barbarian Rage ability, you gain +1 use per rest. You also gain the ability to expend a use of Bardic Music to grant all nearby allies damage reduction 5/-.

If you are going to be a healing bard such that you are the only healer in the party you pretty much have to go all out. The dragonmarks would help ease some of the strain, but I would either build a straight bard or a 1 sorceror 13 bard build. Take empower healing and quicken spell for feats, go all out with bard healing enhancements, get the scepter from the invaders or a nice sup devotion combo, grab the requist bard healing spells especially cure crit and mass cure lt, get your umd high enough so that you can never fail a heal scroll (never failing resurrection scrolls is also nice). My bard has kept up a 12 person reaver raid group as sole healer and done a few gianthold tor elite runs as sole healer.... Remember displacement is one of the best healing spells you have - clerics don't have it, you help the tanks dps so they kill things quicker with your bard songs; hence, the party takes less damage and you can also cc well thus keeping the dps off the tanks. If you insist on having rogue skills see what you can get away with less levels. 1-3 levels of rogue probably tops, but other then a few rogue skills everything should go into healing. Warchanter is nice for the 12 mans especially for the abbot raids (I have been debating building a separate warchanter bard for this purpose), but I like spellsinger for out and around town myself in the 6 mans unless your doing the battle bard thing which would be a whole different build.

hmm yeah read your post a little more closely... if you want to be a combat bard with a little healing and rogue skills maybe you should just go with the get your umd up there higher and have that be your healing. Displacement is pretty big for a combat bard especially if hp and ac could be an issue so I would definitely go there. See if you can be an adequate rogue with 2-3 levels take a couple of levels of fighter and warchanter is a good option, but I would get displacement for sure...

Would still need Power attack
Needs weapoin finess to hit mobs when you got a base Str of 10. ;)

Skip the dragon marks, take a beefy class like dwarf or warforged, and throw in 2 lvls of fighter giving you 2 more feats including improved crit and/or improved twf, finishing at 9/3/2, Brd/Ft/Rog.

Take the Rog lvls at 1, 8 and 13, Fighter at 2 and 12.

Since your best spells are all buffs, Cha need only start at 15. Put all skill points in Dex and/or Str.

It'll work, trust me.

Alternatively, consider subbing The fighter lvls for barb. The increased run speed, speed boost enhancement, HP and rage are all very useful. The flop side is less feats. Remember... you can cancel rage now, you can sing raged, and all your spells/songs/ are done b4 a fight. A rage on the end stacks with everything. When displaced, those 2 weapons, raged, would be awesome.

Keep those Rogue skills decent, but focus on your melee. The 3 lvls of Rogue still provides 2d6 sneak attack dmg, which will kick allot since you're an off-tank.

Lastly, this is an expensive toon to lvl. Although it will have nothing to do with the build, be prepared be a healer for a few pugs b4 lvl 10.

This should, hopefully, be the last modification, particularly since I've run up through level 3 so far. One of the biggest recurring suggestions was to see how few rogue levels I could get away with, so this version has only 3 of them. It still has rogue skills as high as I want; though it feels a bit light on some secondary skills like Hide, Move Silently, Jump, and Tumble, plus only minimal benefit from rogue enhancements. In any case, I can always throw a 4th rogue level or a 2nd fighter level in toward the higher levels if I'm not satisfied with performance.

I like your barbarian suggestion, Cordelia, but have already got the fighter level active. Barb would be a nice substitution, particularly with the Warchanter enhancement which gives you an extra use of rage per rest anyway, but the feat requirements for Warchanter are a little bit outside what I had planned. I have a 9/5 Bard/Barb Dwarf started out at level 1, but have never really gotten around to playing it. What has your ADD done for you lately, eh?

Anyway, here's my final update until I hit about level 12. At that point, I'll see what last minute adjustments feel right.
