Im trying to decide how I want to use my Ranger. I have been pure now up to level 5. I am debating taking 2 levels in mage or two levels in rogue. What I really want out of this is the UMD skill. The Rangers UMD is so low because it is not pure to the class that I find myself not being able to use the scroll, wands and other devices I would really like to use.

So what I'm asking is what would be better in that case?

Thanks,

~K

I'd say one level of rogue... no need for two really get the UMD access and dup all the points into UMD you can

I guess mage = bard?
Just be aware that people will probably expect you to have rogue skills if you have a splash of rogue in a ranger.
I'm not going to try to answer your question of which is better because this is the kind of unplanned multi-classing I usually try to avoid.

Bard would be good (depending on your Alignment) though not as many skill points it does have a few perks

Since you are lvl 5 it doesn't take that long to get back to it. I personally would reroll with the lvl of rogue at lvl 1. With a descent int you can keep most of the rogue skills maxed. This would be with a 14 int. With this you can be the main rogue in a group as well as drop some good damage or stat damage depending on how you design your ranger.
