Well Met everyone!

When I first created my character, I had in-game mail waiting for me. What I was expecting is maybe a message from a GM welcoming me. That would be nice. What I got was a message that violated the CoC from a character that no longer existed and the message was 5 days old! It was sent to me before I even installed DDO and created my first character!

Sorry, I would like to explain more about the problem, but my interpretation of reading the CoC would prohibit me explaining the exact details of the letter and who it was from.

But what I can say that in no way was this email from Turbine, a GM, or a DEV. The question that does begs to be answered is how could somebody outside of Turbine send such an email?

And the next question is when I purchase DDO, is this the normal amout of spam I should expect? Email, people in-game, etc... SPAMming me for activities that are against the CoC?

Thank You.

Welcome Razar!

I'm guessing this is what happened. When you open a piece of mail, the timer says 5 days. That means that 5 days are remaining before it is automatically deleted. You can't tell exactly how old mail is except by subtracting how much time is left from maximum time.

You happened to create your character when a spammer was sending out his spam. He saw your name on the Social Panel, Who Tab and mailed to you. Probably doing the training missions, before you had access to the mailbox.

This is, unfortunately, very common. :( There are 4 major groups that generate this type of mail. On the bright side, Turbine is actively fighting these groups and closed more than 3000 accounts last week alone (number from a Dev chat last evening). Please try to report them in game (but frequently they have deleted the offending character before you can submit a ticket) and Turbine will do their best to track them down and take them out of the player population. :)

Spam is... occasional. It's possible that the mail was sent, the character was deleted without logging on, (or the mail was sent after deletion) and then you happened to get the same name and therefore got the mail. Or something.

I know you keep your friend list if you reroll your toon, maybe the same for mail?

I've mailed things to newly created characters who have not yet logged in the game... if it means anything.

Well Met,
Ghallanda is my home. I'm currently writing some fiction and background information for the four characters that I started: Ghazarind - Elf Ranger, Ogrind - WarForged Sorcerer, Moszivik - Halfing Cleric, and Dalwin - Dwarven Paladin. I am 2nd level in all of them. I am not trying to min/max any of the characters, but am trying to Roleplay them. I'll start actively trying to search for groups when they are 4th level or higher. But right now, I'm pretty much solo.

As a side note (and not directed at anybody in this thread): I am reporting all spam I recieve. So if you are one of those people with funny names and a website, you're going to be reported.
