Roleplaying?

Saw a post for the first time for a group looking for "RP" players only. Can somebody describe what this term means, Roleplaying? The person I asked said I needed to be "in character". Again, drawing a blank here.

Role playing means that you have a character(not a toon). You have to develop that character, figure out his likes and dislikes, and generally create some kind of history for him. What the person you were talking to wanted was for you to imagine yourself actually in stormreach and what you might have actually said to him. Not, "hey lets go do WW". Something more along the lines of, "man, this town is boring, I got here last week and all I do is drink ale. I'm runnin' out of cash, know where i can get some?"

/edit RP'ing can be a blast. It can add immense flavor to the game and can keep things from going stale. Watching someone basically go from soloing tangleroot to running from a lil spider (because they had a bad experience with a certain named spider) can be hilarious.
