Build Name: Mr. Versatility
Author: Sigfried Trent
Requester: Fitz Monkey
Last Updated: 07/01/10

Key Words [Ranger, TWF, Human, DPS, Evasion]

Objectives
The request was for a 32pt human or drow character with evasion, good dps, and strong AC. Gear was not an issue and he had lots of good longswords stocked up.

The original was a drow Paladin/Fighter/Rogue and had a batman build air about it. For the re-desing I went human and decided to take an exploiter (the batman of today) like approach mixing monk with ranger for a great un-armored AC.

Design
Having decided to go with robes and monk, I thought that whirling steel would be fun to work with. Ranger 12 would give me the extra feats and to go hog wild I’d throw in fighter 6 for kensei with longswords. This offers a huge number of feats to work with and a range of skill options... exactly what the name of the build calls for.

You get every feat you would care to have and then-some. At level 20 I had room for an indulgence and took whirlwind attack just for amusement. Every AC bump and DPS bump available to these class levels is in there. Geared up and buffed the AC should be quite impressive and the DPS output is near top notch. Saves are also really well rounded and HP is pretty decent, not to mention a bit of healing amplification.

For skills you have intimidate, enough for crowds but not really boss tanking, marginal UMD, standard balance, lots of jump, concentration, spot, and even decent hide/move. Its really well rounded.

And you get good ranged combat complete with everything you might want short of arcane archer. Its a hard build not to like.

Play
It takes a little while for the build to come together but the fun part is you always have something cool to look forward to as you level up, slowly building the complete package.

Variations
If you wanted a stronger self healer, you could drop tempest 2 and ranger 12 for monk 3 and fists of light. Then change a feat or two to grab empower healing or maximize and shift some AP into ranger devotion. 28pts can work fine for this build, dropping either str to 14 or taking down wisdom and dex a notch. Without tomes you will fall a bit short on skills but you can afford to loose some of the extra in stealth or spot.

I think it is great that people can think these things up, cause it gives me a headache and I just to see something I like and run with it...

Just a couple of questions though.

1. You mention minthal fp, but evasion won't work with medium armor, might have been a typo.

2. I was thinking of a similiar build but go 10/2/2, fighter, paladin, rogue.

Can you tell me some of the things you saw in 9/3/2, that you liked better.

I just like to compare notes. Thanks and have a great day.

The Mithral Full plate and Evasion were just things that the Requester mentioned. They do not indeed work togetehr. You would have to go for Mithral Breast Plate or Kunderak Delving Suit to max out AC while keeping evasion and it would drop you by 3 AC.

It wouldn't be too much trouble to switch out of armor if you wanted evasion for running traps. Some of my characters who use scrolls have a robe of command I equip when scroll casting to avoid ASF penalties. There are quests where evasion is really great, and some where it is mostly wasted.

With the level break's its a close call. I think I chose paladin 3 because it has lots of "goodies" and this build was kind of about fitting in as many different things as I could. You get the extra 1 Ac and Saves as well as the fear immunity and an extra lay on hands. Nothing amazing but decent stuff. Fighter 10 is attractive with another feat and fighter strength 3. Normaly I'd go there, but in this case I couldn't really take great advantage of the extra point of Str so it was a feat vs the paladin stuff and on the scale of "which does more stuff" the paladin level won out. Either way I think it works just fine and if there is a feat you really want the fighter level is great.

I though you cought me there for a moment, but you missed Human Adaptability 1 (Str). I do make mistakes like that in my builds but not this time. Whew! Close one.

This is just my opinion so take it or leave it :) I think for a build like this the best choice of race would be 32 pt. elf with dragonmark displacement. If you go Fighter 8/Rogue 2/Paladin 4 you can get extend for basically constant displacement on top of your AC, saves, and evasion. You can also take the racial elf enhancements and use a rapier which ends up being about as good as a khopesh without enhancements.

Right now outside of going Dwarf for the massive hit points, I think elf w/ dragon mark displacement and the 8/4/2 level split is the best MC fighter combination that you can make. You get UMD, evasion, +2 To-Hit/Damage with Divine Favor, and all the other stuff...

My favorite build ATM is an 8/4/2 TWF elf, you end up with great versatility. In this case you are going for more of a tank which is fine as well. I plan on finishing out fighter so you really don't lose out on much from the fighter levels, it takes longer to get greater weapons spec but divine favor makes up for it. With just a magi item you can have enough spell points to keep it up for 12 minutes between shrines.

I'm thinking that GWF could easily be swapped out for Stunning blow.

Thoughts?

Thoughts?

Sure, it could work. I've had some issues with stunning blow on slashing focused characters. It depends on how you want to use it. If you want to go stun crazy you tend to want weighted weapons which means either you use a blunt main hand or you go with TWF and use it off hand. NEither of which this guy is really set up well for. If you just want to throw stun on the off chance it works, then that's a decent choice and certainly as good as +1 attack over the course of time.

Perhaps I should recruit my wife to re-do my template for me. I've always been bad wtih design. The hope was the colors made it easier to read or to find the parts you wanted to find...

Seriously, if anyone has specific suggestions on format I'd love to hear em.

Any chance of seeing this updated for mod 9 as it's completely broken now (evasion doesn't work in med armour anymore for one)

Plenty of fighter/rogue or paladin/rogue builds on the forums. No need to do a 23 month necro. If you have something specific in mind, go to multiclass or build forums, explain what you want to do, and there will be plenty of people giving advice.

The new build (ftr/mnk/rng) doesn't have whirling steel actually in it, so you're not centered.
