View Full Version : I wanna play AD&D

not 2nd Edition...not 3rd...not 3.5...

I wanna play AD&D, I wanna play with all the polyhedron dice, not just a twenty-sider.

I wanna experience the angst between the half-orc and the elf in the party.

I wanna see a gnomish illusionist again.

I wanna play a Bard, a REAL Bard with a whole bunch of hit points, who has to have some levels fighter and some levels of thief before he's called a Bard in the first place.

I wanna roll to check for psionics.

I wanna fight Type II demons straight from the Abyss with a Holy Avenger.

I wanna finally get my hands on The Invulnerable Coat of Arnd.

I wanna open up Dieties and Demi-gods and find Stormbringer on page 87! Now that's the baddest mama-jama weapon in the game!

I wanna fighter with an awesome AC of -8.

I wanna see The Grandmaster of Flowers kill a cloud giant with the dreaded quivering palm.

Am I the only one who remembers and misses this stuff?

I wanna a thief to be called a thief not a rogue!

My friends and I ran the entire Dragonlance modules last summer. We converted them to AD&D, rolled up chars using skills and powers, and then went crazy.

It was surprisingly unsatisfying.

Although being a cleric that could dual wield morningstars with weapon mastery and cast fireballs was pretty amusing, I really found that I missed the flexibility of 3.X. The flexibility of AD&D was using skills and powers to twink all to heck, and that wasn't quite as fun. :)

Also, the skills in AD&D just made me laugh. I mean, 3.X isn't much for skills, but it sure beats spending points to get a percentage chance to cook.

I want to see the Melnibonain and Cuthulu mythos again!
See a fighter with a +5 bastard vorpal sword, a +6 defender, a +1 flame tongue, a sword of sharpness and so much more.

Speaking of....I was thinking Githyanki would be an awesomely cool addition to DDO, I don't know if they appear in the ebberon stuff, but with the mind flayers and all running around why not?....I mean my toons could use a Special Silver Sword or two.

I too love the old Cthulhu and Melnibonean mythi, as a lad my friend and I would play what we called 'slaughter campaings', where we'd play a 10th level fighter with Stormbringer, allow a player to pick a diety power out of DDG for their character (cast like Isis or something like that), or take a couple of artifacts or relics outta the DMG, and just go out and kill, or run through Against the Giants or something. You gotta have a DM who's really good at and enjoys running big combats though, to really make it fun.

oh yeah...skills and powers??!! that's second addition stuff...crazy stuff...for newbies...we don't need no skills and powers.

I would love to see someone in DDO utter the name "Hastur" and have a 25% chance of having a 400' tall diety come down to pound on him for 1k hp.

I loved AD&D..sigh, recently gave away/sold most of my stuff, no room for it any more (Spider Queen etc etc)

But, it stunk, back then it ruled, now, it's clunky painful and not so good. 3.5 is much better. That's the way it goes :)

I wanna play with all the polyhedron dice, not just a twenty-sider.
DDO does use d4, d6, d8, d10, d12 as well... it's all the weapon & spell damage dice.

I wanna see a gnomish illusionist again.
Yes, I would love it if gnomes and illusionists are added to DDO.

Am I the only one who remembers and misses this stuff?
I do a little, but I've gotten used to 3.5, so it's not really a big deal.

I did find that Wizards redid Tomb of Horrors and White Plume Mountain for 3.5 here (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/oa/20030530b)... kind of cool.

I just remember 2 things from the rare magic items tables that I always wanted to see: intelligent swords (especially if of opposite alignment) and something called Baba Yaga's Hut. I know Baba Yaga was some sort of witch in some mythos, but I have no idea what the heck her hut did. It was the most expensive item in the books though.

In Russian tales, Baba Yaga is portrayed as a hag who flies through the air in a mortar, using the pestle as a rudder and sweeping away the tracks behind her with a broom made out of silver birch. She lives in a log cabin that moves around on a pair of dancing chicken legs, and/or surrounded by a palisade with a skull on each pole. The keyhole to her front door is a mouth filled with sharp teeth; the fence outside is made with human bones with skulls on top — often with one pole lacking its skull, so there is space for the hero or heroes. In another legend, the house does not reveal the door until it is told a magical phrase: Turn your back to the forest, your front to me.

I rememeber her mostly from the old Hero Quest games.

When people say AD&D or 1st edition, they mean the PHB and DMG with "black" covers, and original bound Monster Manual. My parents bought me mine from the Sears Catalog in 1982. :)

We all loved Unearthed Arcana - skills! Pole-Arms!

2nd edition was also called AD&D, and it introduced the class handbooks, skills, and had that silly three-ring-binder Monstrous Compendium.

I really liked the the Fighter's Handbook, but I tuned out the rest of 2nd edition. I just didn't like the way TSR was going. I hated d20 when it came out, but I have really warmed to D&D 3.5, even if it is missing the word "Advanced" in the name.

That said the last PnP game I ran a couple months back was straight 1st edition. Kickin' it old school!

That was awesome. "I'm sorry. You can't fight a Xorn. I only have up to the letter P in the Monstrous Compendiums."

As much as I didn't want to, I have to say that I think 3.x is the best version so far. I'm not sure about 3.5 vs 3.0 (my personal favorite is Arcana Evolved), but they're getting better and better each time, for certain.

I remember when Unearthed Arcana first came out, I called Wargames West (are they still around??) and ordered it COD overnight, even though I didn't have the money :O, c'mon I was like 14 or something, anyways, I spent that day and part of the next scrounging up the cash.

It was better than Christmas morning when the UPS man finally showed up.

They would ambush at some of the most inoppertune moments! :D
By the end of the Campaign the whole party wanted to KILL my character But

It seems in the course of moving I have packed my old books and cannot get to them. :(
does anyone have access to the Old Monster manual or Fiend Folio?
I believe that the Stats for the Githyanki are in the Fied folio.
If so... could someone post them?
That way our intrepid Silver Sword hunter will know what he is up against.

I assume by pamphlet you mean Chainmail? My first copy was bought at a garage sale. Beat up to heck, but it was a great start to my gaming career 25 years ago. They had the wonderful boxed sets come out next (regular D&D) then advanced came out, also called my circle 1st edition. then AD&D 2nd. I stopped there.

Anyone still play 2nd Ed? I have a group that just started meeting up again. We tried 3.0 and then moved back to 2, S&P. It's still fun for us, brings back a lot of memories. We played 2.0 for many many mannny years.

Back when each class had their own exp chart? No such thing as a min/maxer (munchkin), because the smart DMs kept throwing out situations where the munchkin character was worthless?

Ahhh.. Yeah, it was fun to dust of my Core Rules 2.0 and start messing with it again. (I am the DM, btw). Continued them in the world they left off in many years ago, but things went badly when their old characters stopped playing and failed.. *evil laugh*... Sorry, got lost for a second.

I want an 18/00 Strength...

I actually had a ranger - named Aragon - yes I was a lame 12 year old - with an 18/97 Strength. I rolled it fair and square...

Plus rangers got +1 damage per level against Giant-type creatures (precursor to favored enemies)... When he was 8th level, we did the "Against the Giants" series... Man he tore that place apart... Especially G3, Against the Fire Giants... because he had picked up a +3 Frost sword in G2... (I think it did +6 damage against fire creatures)

So 1d12 + 10 (he was 10th level in G3) +6 (Sword) + 5 (strength).

For those that don't know.. that was some serious damage...

I bought this at the tail end (probably after) my pnp D&D days. I was unimpressed.

The pole arm bit was already printed in one of the highly recommended "best of the Dragon" editions (they should reprint these every few years, the first one gave you a wealth of information on pre AD&D history). It went downhill from there. My huge problem were in the classes.

1. Barbarian. Does not play well with others. By mid-level, he might allow the cleric to heal him (he can't group with clerics at level 1). At high levels, he might even be allowed to group with magic-users (wizards to you kids). D&D (any edition including DDO) is a game of teamwork. 1e barbarians were antiparty according to the rules.

2. Cavalier. Not quite so party breaking as a barbarian (although they will take the parties tactical plans and attack whatever gets them the most glory no matter what). This class brought power creep into D&D. This worked by letting you slowly crank your ability scores somewhat like 3.x, although I think it cranked all the physical scores by a dice percentage at once. Since no other class could do this, you would be foolish to stick to fighters and other melee types when these are available. Better yet, this gives you a great way to pull a fast one on the DM (it's not smart to fool the DM) by showing him STR: 18(72). While this is a rather good score, it is vastly more believable than the 18(97) above, but on a cavalier it means that he is going to have a gamebreaking STR(19) [since there exist all the exceptional strength levels between 18(01) and 18(00) 19>>18] by at least 4th level.

The rest seemed to be a bunch of filler. Mostly spells and magic items that would have a hard time justifying space in The Dragon.

I remember 1st Edition AD&D.

Don't miss it.

At least not as long as I have 2E.

While 1st Ed was good, 2nd was better IMO. It gave players alot more options to individualize their characters, without going into the kind of ridiculous power-gaming that is not only prevalent, but seemingly encouraged by the rules, in WotC&D (yeah, thats what I call 3.0 and later editions. WotC killed D&D.) It's gotten to the point that it's taken over the roleplaying aspect of the game, and it's no fun anymore.

2E also vastly improved some rules from 1E that seriously needed to be changed. For instance, take a look at the 1E Dieties and Demigods and then compare it to Legends & Lore. Notice the difference? Yeah. In 2E, dieties didn't have Hit Points. Because by that time, someone with an actual working brain probably spoke up and said "should mortals really be able to kill a god?!?"

As for those people who complained about 2E having some kind of "three-ring binder" Monstrous Compendium from 2E....yeah I saw that years back. When I bought my 2E stuff though, way back in the olden days, I went with the other option: the hardcover Monstrous Manual. Which went from A to Z. So don't say you didn't like it just cause you bought the wrong book.

AD&D was good, and I probably sounded like I was knocking it more than I intended to. But IMO 2E was a vast improvement over an already good system. Everything thats been done since WotC got their claws into D&D has been garbage.

+1. I could not agree more. That is the game my friends and I still play. Sometimes with the supplimental books (Skills/power, combat/tactics,etc). Depends on our group and our campaign. I still like 1e, it was a great game, and a great base for what 2e became.

I am not overly impressed with 3.0 or 3.5. It was weird to see everything I knew about the game was change so dramatically. I read through the players handbook, Dungeon Masters Guide and a few minor suppliments after it had been out for a while. I could not wrap my head around taking AC the other way, the removal of THAC0 all together and all these bonuses gained through "feats".

not 2nd Edition...not 3rd...not 3.5...

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't AD&D and 2nd edition the exact same thing?

Legends a guild on the Khyber server has several guild members that play pen and paper via ventrilo and some very nice game software that allows us to play D&D with players all over the world. We play once per week just to keep our weekly dose and its a lot of fun.

Our web page link is at the bottom of my post just click on Legends.

No, the first edition was called Advanced D&D, the shortened to AD&D. Then the second edition came out which was also called AD&D for some reason, but can also be known as 2nd Ed.

What I remember and miss about the AD&D 2nd Ed was the different campaign settings it has. Grayhawk, Forgotten Realms, Dragonlance, Dark Sun, Kara-tur, Maztica, Al-Quadim, Ravenloft, Spelljammer, Planescape.

Did I miss anything?

I've only ever played 2nd Edition. I stopped playing in... 1987 I think. It totally caught me by surprise when I started playing DDO last year- I was thoroughly annoyed by the AC being positive numbers only to say the least.

I don't think I could ever fall back into the roleplaying mindset like I could as a kid, but I do miss it.

AD&D is 2nd :P
In reality both 1st and 2nd editions were AD&D. They also had a Basic set in production at the same time.

They dropped the A (advanced) portion when they went to 3.0 because they thought it would frighten away potential customers who would interprite that to mean it required some basic level of knowledge of the game.

Trust me...I played AD&D and still have the books (actually have basic & expert too) and when I ran into others who claimed AD&D was 2nd we compared books and while similar, the content is not the same...
Yeah there were a ton of differences between 1st and 2nd editions. Bard as a base class, Monk as a subset of non-spell-casting preist, etc...

You did mean 35 years right? 25 years ago was 85' and AD&D 1st ed was still king, although they were about to (or just had) oust Gary Gygax.

Chainmail was out in the 70's. I started with AD&D 1st edition in 1980 or so. Still have my original Deities & Demigods (yes with the two later retracted mythos). In fact I have all my game books from 1st, 2nd, 3.0, 3.5 and 4th (although I am lothe to call 4th D&D).

I have a 1 edition gamebook(never played it) with a demon on the cover holding a maiden in his hand chasing a party. Looks so vintage lol

Wait... 2nd edition didn't come out until '89?? I guess I've only ever played 1st edition then. I could have sworn I had some books that said "2nd" on them though. Boy that was a long time ago.

I had these books:
