View Full Version : Error: Cannot join Chat Room

I tried joining a team this morning, but I got an error message saying that I could not join the chat room. I was unable to chat with the group, because of that.

I tried logging out and logging back in, but it didn't fix it. I was able to PM the group leader but that was it.

I just came back to the game. Is this a common occurrence? I recall there were occasional chat issues when I left the game in January, but nothing this severe.

Any suggestions?

Interesting.

I'm on Vista as well. Once I get XP installed on my desktop again, I'll have to check it out there.

it still does that on XP, its not a OP specific problem. It used to had to go into another area to reset it, but this morning it happend to me everywhere.

First you will want to make sure you configure any router and firewalls you have as this is VERY common when they are not configured for DDO (you need to open ports usually) 9000-9013 udp and 80 udp.

I had issues with general chat not being available last night. I had to quit the game and come back in to get it working again since logging out and logging back in didn't fix it.

We have had various guild members not being able to see guild chat and what they type in guild chat not displaying. This seems to be random and started after the update. Although there was a similar/same bug with chat awhile back as I remember.
My guild chat and general chat stopped working this past Saturday evening, the 6th, after it had worked fine earlier in the day. Logging in and out, quitting the game did not fix it. Finally, on Sunday afternoon, I restored my chat windows to default via the options panel and that fixed it. Hopefully it won't return.

Thanks

Thanks for posting that - odd that restoring it fixed it, possibly a config file coruption.

Thanks for the info.

I just got the game running on my desktop with XP and was able to chat fine. I'm guessing it has to do with the default Vista firewall settings, but I haven't tried anything yet.

Edit: Ok, well that doesn't seem to have helped. I opened up the ports mentioned, but I still get three "Chat server is temporarily unavailable. Please try again shortly" messages when I log on. And any time I try typing I get "General chat is not available in this area." This is in House P, and I have tried waiting.

Take 3: Alright, I just tried the Resetting Chat displays thing, and it fixed it. All I had changed was the size of the Chat display. If that all it takes, then ok, but it seems weird. At least it seems to work.

I am having the same problem as well. I get the same error message and can only send private tells. I am also having an issue with the voice chat as well. I have gone into the options and enabled voice chat I have even selected the proper hardware for my headset and still nothing. I have also logged in and out a few times and nothing changes. But after reading all the posts on this thread I also have Vista has annyone been able to resolve this issue ?

Have you tried resetting your UI settings? Also, what router are you using?

The few times I have had this happen to me, shutting down and rebooting has always cleared the problem. I am running XP but I have not tied it specifically to game updates or XP updates. It does not happen often.

I haven't been able to shake this problem tonight. I've tried opening 9000-9012, though the WRT54G is a stateful firewall and doesn't need it. I've tried resetting UI windows. I've tried relogging and rebooting. The sacrificial chicken is next, because the chats are scared and Jobu will take the fear away.

I lied. The full client reinstall was next, and it didn't do any good.

Anybody have the IP address of the chat server(s)?

I am also experiencing the same issues. Restoring default settings does not work, nor does opening more ports. I can not chat in /say, /guild, /party, nor can I hear or use voice chat.

Howdy, Just installed Vista on a new box. Installed the game, updated, and logged in. Recieved the chat room errors and unable to receive/send party messages (other than tells). Tested ports, compatibilty mode, UAC, reset chat windows, ect. The culprit turned out to be the Mcaffee Corp Anti-V. Uninstalled the Anti-V and the chat room stuff worked. It was the only necessary change (other than setting the program to run with admin rights). I read online that sometimes the Anti-V stuff messes with the UAC (blocks ports and such). Pretty new to Vista but this fixed my issue. HTH

Hey guys. Got ahold of a CSR today who gave me the solution.
If you have D&D Online running, shut it down.
Go to your Documents folder and open your Dungeons and Dragons Online folder. Open your UserInterface.ini file and look for this:

UserSpecifiedPort=0

It should be located near the bottom of the list. Change the '0' to '9000' so that it looks like this:

UserSpecifiedPort=9000

Click File, then Save.

This should resolve your problem.

Enjoy,

and if 9000 doesn't work you can try 9000-9005 and see if one of them do.

Or just do like I had to do and reboot your router. Apparently 45 days uptime was just a bit too much for the old Linksys. Didn't say there was anything wrong, just quietly decided to start dropping packets. Oh well.

This can happen with many residential internet service providers. You should be able to flush your dns cache, and that will produce the same results without having to find a paper clip to reset the router.

I had the same problem (running Vista etc.) the file that I found is called "UserPreferences.ini" not "UserInterface.ini". The UserPref file contains the "UserSpecifiedPort=0" string, I made the suggested 9000 change and it worked...

Well I take that back, chatting still does not work! I can type but it always shows up in the general tab. I can send tells but can't chat in the party or guild tabs, very frustrating! At least the "cannot join chat room" message is gone!
