View Full Version : How come I never see barbarian/rogue builds?

So I never see rogues cross classed with barbarians. Why is that? Seems like a good match to me. More hit points, increase in speed, dr, martial weopons and heavy shields, 4 skill points not bad, more uncanny dodges and some other rogue stuff too. I would think that maybe a dwarven barbarian/rogue would make a good build. Besides many people do 1 level of fighter for weopons and shields and dont care about the feat so why not do a barbarian. Lets see some builds!

Because you can't disarm a trap while you are Raged.
This may change when Barbarians are allowed to Dispel Rage.

Sometimes you may not know how long the party will take to get to the trap. Sometimes the traps are just after a big fight. Sometimes there are so many **** traps in the quest you wouldn't want to rage at all. PUGs are an impatient lot .. they would probably just run through them rather than wait for you .. so a lot of people figured it wasn't worth sitting around waiting for.

Splashing a level of barbarian is a good deal. You wont suffer from the rage because it is very short. The extra speed and weapons are worth it.
However, splashing paladin is more worth it.

lack of skill points on the barb levels can really hurt your rogue skills, I wouldn't splash too many barb levels.

I was in a PuG tomight with a 5barb 2 rogue. Not sure what the purpose of the build was but thought I would throw that out there.

barbarians & rogues combined are kind of like drinking chocolate milk & eating tacos at the same time, not very good

I know Grenfell tried to make one of these days, but forgot about it because of this reason. I've seen a few 12 barb/2 rogue (evasion), but none with rogue skills. Like General said, this might change in the future.

You can pull off rogue/barbs. It's just that people are often enticed by splashing pally for saves, ranger for ranged or 2wf skills, or fighter for feats. Barbs can often be forgotten when going up against some obviously powerful combos. But if you are making a frontline combat rogue and prefer the direct approach (damage), then perhaps barbarian is the right subclass for you.
My guildie is finishing up a dwarven rogue/barbarian right now and he enjoys it. Just remember, you are a rogue first. Don't skimp on your rogue skills and you should be fine.

I don't know what you are talking about, by my only non-SP character is a Barbarian/Rogue/Fighter and after playing one I don't think I'd have it any other way. I can stun, I can trip, I can smash monsters, I can smash traps (in a good way), I can heal myself and others in the downtime or if someone goes horizontal mid-fight... its fun stuff. This was the build I used (but it got abducted by the post purge).

My biggest regret with this build is it has the absolute worst will save possible in the game. But then again, "Why Cow care if Cow dancing!? It fun!" :D

I have a 7 Rogue/5 Barb I play on Ghallanda. Its a very fun build to play. Combat for rogues and barbarians is basically the same. You want to flank as much as possible and try not to draw aggro. Flanking bonuses plus the sneak attack bonuses really help you get your to hit up. You have to be careful though because you can easily pull aggro away from the tanks especially with power attack turned on :) 14 int will give you 6 skill points a level which will allow you to cross train a little. I will provide a few pros and cons below.
Pros:
Good action boosts : Rogue haste, Barbarian Damage reduction, either rogue or barb damage boost are good for either class.
Trap sense stacks properly. You will have the same trap sense as a pure rogue or barb provided your lower level is divisible by 3.
Both classes get enhancements to trap sense.
Uncanny Dodge at Barb 2
Improved Uncanny Dodge at Barb 5
Cons:
Horrible will saves
Underpowered against undead
Uncanny Dodge does not stack in anyway. Barb uncanny dodge (lvl2) should stack with rogue uncanny dodge (lvl 4) to provide improved uncanny dodge. Instead you get a feat clicky for each class but they are on the same counter. Clicking barb uncanny dodge counts both counters down. (This really should be fixed.)
If you want to be good at traps, you will not have much room for barbarian enhancements.
Best barb enhancements come at late levels.
More than likely, you will be dumping wis and char so again, low will saves, along with negatives to spot and UMD.
As you can see, there are far more cons to this build. If I ever choose to reroll, I would go the fighter route instead for the extra feats.

I have an 11/3 Barbarian/Rogue. Rogue lvls are for evasion, umd and open locks. Uncanny dodge with evasion is awesome. DPS stacks up with full barbarians and will save minuses can be countered with gear and enhancements. I know I dont have crit rage 2 and I have another lvl 14 pure barb. Hes hits for more but mainly because hes wf not because hes pure barb. Not sure what math is on crit 14-20 vs 13-20 but I can tell you in practice its not noticeable. UMD is 30 should be 31 and could be 33 with 8 starting CHA. The rogue lvls also give 2d6 backstab damage that bypasses any dr. In any case never really worried about trapsmithing, Im a barb at heart can just run through the traps.
BTW Was just looking thru posts and didnt look where I was. I dont think rogue/barb trapsmiths would work because of stat point distribution, too many points too many places. Im sure someone made it work. Id be more inclined to dip pally too.

I love my one level of barbarian along with 3 levels of ftr and 10 of rogue. Couple extra hps never killed anyone but I mainly took it for the speed increase in addition to spending 1 AP for the boost. With a haste and 25% striders, you are off to the races.:)
Not for everyone but I do like to use my stealth and with all these things I move faster in stealth than some of the slow pokes at normal run speed.:) Without the added speed Id fall behind everyone.
After the next level increase the character will look like he makes alot more sense rog11/ftr4/barb1, maybe people will stop making fun of me:)

Its a great match - Barbarians get more skill points than most melees & run fast ftw!
Barbarians can now dispel rage.

I think 1 level of barb compliments a rogue for the run increase and proficiencies but any more than that and you don't get much for what you put out.
A fighter gets combat feats at levels 1, 2, and 4 and a paladin gets useful stuff at levels 2 and 3 (more enhancement at level 3, but at level a paladin 2 gets charisma added to saves).
Barbarian is the only melee class that gets a big advantage to not multiclassing (with the extended crit range at 14). A barb at heart usually doesn't have a good reason to take a rogue, and a rogue never has a good reason to take more than 1 barb level.

Barb/Rogues have always been a viable option, but do take some skill (and timing) to play. A 14 INT Barb can keep 3 CC skills maxed, allowing for full Rogue Abilities... Now, most Barbs have merely splashed Rog2 for Evasion.
A Rogue splashing a melee class certainly could take Barb and the extra 2 skills are a nice bonus. However, 2 additional HP, Fast Movement and Rage often lose out to a bonus Fighter Feat or Divine Grace.
To each their own.
