I've never actually seen someone use the action point for one of these before. I was wondering if anyone had, and what they're opinion of it was.
My rogue is going Way of the Mechanic and I was thinking about trying this as well...An extra damage spong in rough spots, or maybe a flank buddy if I try to solo some content.
My fear is that it might end up like low-level summon spells: where the thing stays at your heels and so never takes initial aggro of enemies and it can't hit the broad side of a planet and thus will never gain aggro against an enemy to absorb damage (much less deal any back).

from what ive heard they just kinda spam cast grease and well youll have the reflex to deal with it but most of your party members wont appreciate it at all

I've had them before. Not very usefull in a group unless they are your close friends because they will grease your party. However they have some uses soloing as it gives you someone to take aggro from you and let you get in more sneak attacks.

same as the others said, although if you get the mithril one, he at least alternated spamming grease and burning hands.. still couldn't hit the broad side of the mob, and really wasn't aggressive enough in getting initial agro -- although the AI's been tweaked a few times since I had one, so that might be better now..

Ran one of my lowbies the other day and a guy was using one. About 5 minutes into the quest the whole party agreed he should stop using it. Horrible for the party.

I've got one on my rogue, just for the amusement value only. Theoreticaly if I were soloing it might be useful for me getting in a sneak attack.. but really, not so great. A WF wizzie might be able to get some use out of one by buffing it and they can get it earlier than a rogue.
I pull mine out occasionaly to tease folks with the grease or just to confuse people in quests that have them in there. Basicaly 2pts of gag enhancement.

You know I hadn't tried it because I am not in the habit of using diplomacy while soloing, will diplomacy throw aggro onto the defender? If so it might increase it's effectiveness.

WF paladins should be able to use them as mounts.

I find playing with a WF wizard that the defender dogs are good to have in the earlier parts of the game as they can take a couple hits and grease is often an effect that helps nullify the heavy hitters (trolls, ogres, Guardian of Shan-To-Kor, they all have low reflex). The fire breath on the mithril defender is also web safe.
As a rogue with way of the mechanic, though, I'm not sure you will find as much of a use. However, the diplomacy trick does work (and you can get similar results UMD'n off a summoned monster).

Glad to hear I can throw off the aggro onto the doggies:) Maybe I will have a little more success soloing w/ my rogues.

Agreed:) That would be great.

Well obviously we're on top, because the drow and dwarves are shoved in the rear to fuel the grease pumps:)
