View Full Version : PK or FOD or both?
Better to have both or just FOD?
From what I read it seems PK requires 2 saves where as FOD only requires on SAVE.
So is FOD better to take and wait for? Yes I know PK is 4th lvl spell and FOD is 7th so it would be a long wait but which is better to take?

both. pk will work pretty good but FoD is better, but by taking them both you can alternate in their casting and turn into an instant-kill machine.

Ok.....so I will need to then take both feat focus, Illusion and Necromancy then I guess.

I wouldn't. I'd look into a nice spell penetration item, maybe get the napkin from the Reaver. I have FoD on key 1 and PK on key 2 and can usually drop something pretty quick. If FoD misses PK usually hits. Just because its hard for a mob to make that save twice in row.

If not both then which one? Illusion or Necro ?

Dont take either, save your feat for metamagic...
Get a good greater spell pen item and then run the reaver till you get the napkin.

Metamagic?

Metamagic?
Heighten. Extend. Maximize. Enlarge. Empower.
A heightened PK is basically the same as a FoD. It just allows a will save in addition to the fortitude save.
Against non-caster (ie. low will saves) monsters: heightened PK = FoD.
And like stated above, as a Sorcerer (short cooldowns) you can spam PK, FoD, PK, FoD, PK, FoD, PK, FoD, PK, FoD .. Everything 'cept undead and constructs will go down eventually.

yep. as a sorc you will want to save your feats for empower, heighten, maxamize, etc. If you were playing a wizard i would suggest picking up greater spell focus necromancy, but you should do fine w/o it.

Please please get heighten if you want to play around with PK... also, some scrolls of enervation can make it easier for it to hit if you don't have a good spell pen item....
I learned this the HARD way... ugh...

There are things that FoD will work on that PK will not....ancient spiders, certain drow, and other monsters of sorts...but not too many.
As many do not take spell pen feats, you might as well not use both if you do not. Too many things have spell pen and to take two spells that can be ignored due to it is just no good.
Take it two ways...
1- take the metamagic ideas above and just go for damage specc...try acid for a change....you'll see in next update.
2- take spell pen feats and fire away with both of them.
Take heighten for PK....useless for FOD.
WIth the spell pen you will get in the 20s to penetrate their resistance....without it everything will get that 'extra save' way too often.
I guess if you get the reaver napkin and the feats you will be unstoppable...

I use both PK and FoD. 34 charisma, Spell pen 7 item, Greater Spell Pen 4 item, Illusion focus item, Necromancy focus item, Spell pen feat, Spell pen enhancements.
I never heighten pk's. They seem to land alot without it. If they don't land, my next FoD is ready to fire anyway. ;)

Enervation lowers saving throws...not spell resist (dunno maybe the negative levels affect SR as well) but anyway, if your normal spells are having trouble passing a spell PENETRATION check, then your scroll casted Enervations have even less chance...
Far too many people still don't understand the difference between Spell Resistance and saving throws i see.

For the twenty-millionth time already, SPELL PENETRATION ITEMS DO NOT HELP YOUR SPELLS HIT!! THEY HELP YOU PENETRATE SPELL RESISTANCE!!!!
If something has no spell resistance, a spell penetration item is useless.

I think I understand...
But I do know that if I hit someone with an enervation and then a PK they die... now maybe they would have died without the enervation... and maybe having my spell penetration item in my hand did no good, but they died... which is the goal to me...
Now, if I am using a Spell Penetration item which gets past their Spell resistance and I hit them with an enervation which lowers their saving throws then I am guessing my PK is going to land :D
I'm just saying...
