Sorc Potency and Combustion question

Veteran player but a newbie to spell casting, (I've made mostly mele's)

Does Potency and Superior combustion items stack?

Which is better:

Potency + Greater spell pen
Superior item + Potency
Superior item + Greater Pen item


I don't know if I'm making sense.

In DDO, spells that do damage bypass SR. So, Spell Pen is not good in the combo. And Potency & Combustion/Corrosion/Magentism/etc. don't stack.

What you are looking for is the best Potency/Combustion/etc. for the spells you want to cast. Pair it with the best Fire/Ice/Lightning Lore item you can get for more frequent, more damaging spell crits. Eg., You want the best firewalls. You have Improved Potency VI and Superior Combustion IV. Wall of Fire is level 4, so use Superior Combustion IV and Superior Fire Lore.


P.S. Pair your Spell Pen item with a focus item for spells that need to penetrate Spell Resistance. Eg., Illusion Focus and Greater Spell Pen IV for PK.

They do not stack. Note that you can get a superior potency 7 item. That will cover every spell to 7th lvl with a 50% increase in damage.

For my own caster I go with a superior potency VII dagger in one hand, and a superior fire lore ( lore items increase your chances to crit for more damage with those types of spells ) OR ice lore in the off hand, depending on what I'm fighting.

Combustion only affects your fire spell damage.
Glaciation = cold spells
Magnatisim = electric
Corrosion = acid
Impluse = force
Nil = negative energy
Resonnance = sonic
Potency = all types

All of these come in lesser to superior quality ( 10% to 50% damage increase ) and will not stack. Only the highest that will effect the type of damage the spell is doing applies.

There are a couple of choices for you. I have the Elf robe, which has Arcane Lore on it, which gives a 6% chance to crit. I don't really need a lore item in addition to a potency item. However, for people who don't (and when I didn't) I hotbarred all my Lore Items (Greater Fire Lore and Potency, Greater Ice and Potency, etc.) Keep the Potency in the off hand so that swapping lore weapons out is easiers.

Yes it does. An item stacks with an enhancement.

What I wonder is: does a potency item supercede every other increase item (glaciation/combustion/freeze/inferno/benevolence/etc) of equal or lower grade? e.g. does a improved potency III item supercede an improved glaciation III item (for cold spells), but not a superior combustion III item (for fire spells)?

Potency takes the place of most of the *ions....including combustion, glaciation, devotion, nullification, etc.
The "improved" or "superior" on these items indicates the % of damage increase.
the roman numerals...III...VI... etc.. indicate what level spells it will apply for.

So therefore....
Improved Potency III will be the same as having Improved Glaciation III AND Improved combustion III.
but SUPERIOR combustion III will do more damage (just to only combustion spells though).

I hope that makes sense.
In general... Look for a Greater Potency VII or Superior VI scepter and replace all of those other *ion items with one. :)

Still relatively new to the game and lvling a sorc atm. Need a little bit of a clarification from this discussion. I am currently lvl 11 and plan on using

Main hand a wep with impoved combustion VII (+40% Dmg) Evocation Focus, and Illusion Focus (+1 to DR for both) Lvl 12
Off hand Wep with Implroved Pen VII Lvl 12

I am currently using

Main hand Improved Pen V
Off Hand Improved Glacation V
Ring Improved Combustion IV
Illusion Focus Bracers

Main Offensive spells at this time is of course SR, Cone of Cold, and PK. @12 should I swap out Pen VII for a potency or am I better off keeping it for PK? Was trying to find a Ring to compensate for the loss Glacation wep but ive been unable to find one in Auction or loot. Is there one? Sorry for the thread hijack ^^;
