when will those with high enough str be able to smash chests and doors; and bend bars?

Or using an Adamantine Dagger to cut through the latch/hinges of a chest like it were butter?

Some doors can be smashed, and some even require a certain strength score.
As far as chests, I doubt if we will see it since they probably won't want to step on Rogues. The knock spell really only works on the easiest locks so its not so much an issue.
Personally, even though one of my favorite characters is a Rogue, I would not mind if they made some chests forceable via strength.

if chests were forcible thru bashing, you'd have to give it a random chance to permanently destroy/damage the loot inside. any loot that is damaged or destroyed should be displayed in the chest.
after seeing a few especially good pieces of loot lost due to bashing, a rogue will still be desired. of course, bashing it open would still be better than crying over a chest because you lack one.
i'd also say that bashing a chest should be a timer based option that's interruptible when hit (ie. traps make it more difficult/impossible). i'd basically like to see a "feat of strength" as opposed to "bashing the tar out of it until it opens"
then there's the fact that it should aggro a HUGE radius.

even though i have a rog and I feel that a good rog is essential if you wanted to break a chest open some str check should be rolled and a one would have a 50% percent chance that all the items in the chest would break once opened in this manner.
That would be a good way of solving those stuborn quest with no rogs.

This is a little off the topic of bashing chests but...
I'd love to see trapped chests come into the game.
Also, this would be a perfect opportunity to introduce Mimics.
Big burly fighter takes his +4 Useless Ability Worthless Weapon of Greater Crappy Mob Bane, swings at a chest and one of two things happen:
1. The chest explodes like a claymore anti-personnel mine throwing razor sharp shuriken all over the room.
or...
2. Your weapon meets chest with a solid THUD said chest snaps open and critically bites you for 110 points of damage. You save versus Trip (DC30). You roll a 1. You fall over.
Oh, let the fun begin. :D

This is a little off the topic of bashing chests but...
I'd love to see trapped chests come into the game.
traps that trigger when chests open already exist. for mechanical reasons though, the trap box isn't actually ON the chest (rather near it): Xorian Cipher, VoN3, Tangleroot7, etc
i'd assume that these traps would activate just as they do now if you forget to disable the trap before opening the chest.

I would be okay with smashing chests open, but you'd have to implement something like a 50% chance that the items inside will be destroyed.

hehe, the repeating-lightning trapped chest in VoN3 cracks me up everytime. i open it, back off, and dare the party to go for it.
if you buff prot from electricity beforehand, they might just think resist will be enough :)

30 pt. Resist plus the ring from PoP means such traps are fairly survivable. unless you repeatedly roll 1's on saves.

that being said, that really wasn't the point.

the whole room? does this chest spawn at random or somehting? Casue out of all the times i went through Von3 I never saw such a trapped chest, only trapped chest i saw in Von3 was the sonic/force one.

the lightning one is random and behind an optional door (right before the first shrine and the group of scorpions if i recall).
the only real reason to go into that room is to ensure ransack... or hope for the named.

I literally meant trapped chests.
Not traps located AROUND a chest.
EG: Poison needle in the latch, cloudkill on opening, etc.
