View Full Version : On Auto-Buffing...

So here's the thing... I don't auto-buff anymore for people I don't know. I don't even buff on request sometimes. Now let me explain why, and maybe this will slowly fix itself.

Too many people have access to their own 'buffs' greater resist cloaks, rings, armor etc. I hate wasting my time casting fire resist on someone who wears a grtr resist cloak, it bugs me.

Too many people holler out in voice chat what they need, and by the time I've buffed the first person I've forgotten who asked for what else.

We have a higher proportion of zergers now than we used to... and that includes me sometimes (I do get a kick out of being able to kill stuff again as a cleric).

So, if you want buffs do me, and every other buffer a huge favor. type out in party chat what you want. Then hang out until you see the person responsible for that buff start moving off. Then go to voice chat and say 'Hey Divine/Arcane can <my name here> get Buff X?'

Don't say "I" say your bloody name. I might not be looking at the screen for that 2 seconds your talking, I might just be ********, play to my lowest common denominator and make my life easy if you want something from me.

There, that's that. I want to buff people. I just don't want to waste both my time and your time, and everyone else's casting **** that's already covered. I won't even ask why you want it, as long as you want it. I hate it when people question why I want Freedom of Movement on my fighter. I don't care if there's nothing in PoP that normally casts hold, please for the love of DDO, just humor my paranoid arse.

It's kinda like hearing arcanes whine about their GH scrolls when I play my fighter. I tell people 'Hey Smush has his own GH', I still end up getting it cast on me.

Anyway... I'm babbling at this point. Sorry if I offended anyone *shrug*

P.S. This issue was brought up in another thread, but it seemed threadworthy on its own.

No but honestly... IMO I have no problem remembering who asked for wat and if I missed someone they quickly remind me on my cleric/wizard/bard. I even help buff on my Paladin its not hard to look at someones info to see what they have and dont have... try using F1-F6 then your z key.

LOL dun you know "z" does not give you all the info you need. when my ftr is using his gtr fire cloak, it does not show that he has gtr fire resist. same with the dq cloak and some other items with perm effect

it is not about wasting sp. its about redundant casting. many times i've seen casters running with bards and when a tank request for a haste, both cast it. i absolute hate sp wastage and in my quests, i'd ask for who need what buffs and for them to type it out so i know what exactly to cast. i'd also see who has what spell and then plan out who cast what. its about resource effectiveness not management.

If you are a wizard, roll a sorc. If you are a sorc, stop crying and buff the party...you have plenty of sp.

as i've explained before smush. i prefer to cast the first GH on you so that you can save your girds for dispels. i buff in 3 situations -> zone in, i'm at a shrine with mana, and when i'm running slow.

When I zone in to a typical instance, I drop the following on all party members: GH, jump, blur, resist fire. I don't care if you have a fire cloak, my resist fire will now allow you to put on a protection/resistance/other elemental resist cloak instead (same goes for blur). If the quest warrants other buffs, or they are requested, they get thrown on too.

I love playing a sorc... buff the entire party and still have plenty of mana left to destory with.

Standard stuff. Maybe people need a refresher (or for those new to the game, here ya go)...

If on mic, just get used to saying your character's name anytime you need something from someone else (e.g. 'Tom needs fire resist, lesser restore, etc.'). Unless you're in a tight group or guild it's hard for buffers to associate a new voice to a character's name. And no, keeping track of when a toon's voice light comes on doesn't help - multiple people could be talking or if you're like me, your voice lit comes on once in a while even though I don't have a mic.

Otherwise, I have to agree with JKM - it's cooler to save the gird for later on. The only exception to this would be if the buffer is having to use a scroll - I'd rather burn through my gird than have the person waste plats on maintaining GH scrolls (yes, I know we all have enough plat to put the plat farmers to shame, but it's the principle...).

I think for the good of the group, it's better for people to play their roles, but at the end of the day, the game is to have fun and people can play how they want. Otherwise, for those out there that expect casters to expend all their mana just to keep the group buffed only (or change to a sorc if we don't have enough mana to do other stuff with) - the good thing about this game is that there are generally alternatives to everything. So if you want buffs that badly, go build up your UMD, loot named items, and then go buff yourself.

If I'm a cleric that refuses to overheal, and cater to poor play with wands, and heal scrolls I'll continue my stingy mana conserving ways.

Yeah I know... did I forget to mention that I get mostly irritated by people whining about scrolls on that one?
