With the low percentage of women (compared to men) playing DDO, I'm sure many of the female characters are played by men. Having a variety of classes/races/genders makes any group more realistic and interesting during game play. So the big question is:

How should one handle voice chat?

Turn it off and just listen, leave it on and do your best impression or just use your normal male voice?

Lol there is no need to disguise ur voice :) unless u REALLY want to b 'into' ur character. I have several male friends that play DDO and normally they r just themselves. The sillier moments are when they DO decide to do their best female impersonation :D

I play some male as well as female toons and must say I kinda prefer staring at a male bum myself ;)

I have about a 50/50 mix of male and female characters. I NEVER try to RP any of them on voicechat. My wife gives me enough strange looks for talking to the computer as it is :D

I only RP two of my characters, and always through text. I don't know that I've ever heard anyone RP a character on voicechat.

Regardless of the sex of my characters, I normally will use text for the rp and voice for ooc.

A good portion of my characters are female because as a friend of mine once said, "I prefer looking at the rear of a woman all day long than I would the bum of a man." Frankly, I'm inclined to agree. :)

I have one friend who is male and plays quite a few female characters. He already has a bit higher voice for a guy but he still can't do a female voice worth a darn. It really sounds quite goofy.

I end up playing female characters in DDO because their proportions look so much better than the males (even though they are still off). Even tho I am female I don't try rping through voice chat because typing makes it easier really. I would really rather look at the male bums but since they look so utterly horrible in this game I've opted for the better looking of the two sexes. :D

I've gotten yelled at because some of the men who play this game SOUND like girls. And when I use the wrong gender pronoun they tend to be upset.

As for character selection, I tend to play female elves/halflings, and male other races, just as a rule of thumb. I choose whichever looks nicer for the role.

Oh, and please try to disguise your voice to RP. It will give me no end of entertainment.

Is the percentage fo men to women for the game known? Or are we extrapolating from other MMO stats?

Because we have about 20-25/80-75 mix of women to men in our guild and I know of a fair number of female players on Argo. It seems like more than my personal biases had lead me to expect before I started grouping ( as opposed to soloing) routinely.

The male human runs goofy looking, like the female halfling. Some character models are simply easier to watch for hours on end - even aside from the difference in the 'curvature' of the polygons. ;)

Thats because everything with two X chromosomes in this game doesn't have 36DDs, unlike some other MMOs I know of. =P

whats strange is I have had male characters tell me to not use voicechat with my few male toons.. because they found it disturbing to look at a hairy dwarf and hear a womans voice.

I am a female in real life, and I can't tell you how disturbing it is listening to the male narrator in DDO try to sound like a female in quests like cry for help. Please don't try this stunt at home... even the professionals can't do it, and they're trained.

I'm rather used to males playing female toons, and it doesn't disturb me a bit.. maybe because I'm so used to seeing it being a long time gamer. There is, by the way, a gaming term for this "phenomenon" which is comprised of the word "man" and an abbreviated part of the female anatomy.

Most women gamers, although fewer in number, tend to play female toons more often than not. Male gamers either play strictly males because like women, that is what they identify themselves as, or sometimes as both male and females because they find the females more pleasant to look at while spending their time playing but find there are too few in game. I don't know any men that actually role play their toon as a female... that is not to say they don't exist, but if they do, they are quite good at it.

I remember when I first started playing DDO. Got invited into a guild right off the bat and had a good time with all them. From what I could see/hear, all the male guildies played male characters and all the female ones female. That is until someone finally broke the ice. One guy came on with a new character: a female elf ranger. We all laughed at how funny it was to hear this man's voice coming from that character. He laughed too and said he'd rather spend his time playing looking at a female elf's backside than a male's. Very shortly after that a lot more of the guys rolled up female toons.

As a female I even agree the female toons are better to look at (outside of dwarves). Don't do the RP thing but know many males that play females for this exact reason. As was mentioned about the narrators all I gotta say is this "The chamber will seal in 10 seconds". That would explain why many of us say please don't try to do your best female voice impression.

Even though I am a male, I play better as a female character. I do not ju8dge by voice, if toon is female I will address according to toons gender. If the voice (if person uses voice) prefers to be addressed as a male or a female then that is what I go with.

Some personalities go better with female some go better with male.

most of my charecters are male, but I do have one female charecter. She is a cleric, My female charecter worships a scorpion, this is something that even though I play a charecter that does this, I don't worship a scorpion. I am not my charecter. I think its ok for a male to play a female charecter and there are a number of different reasons for wanting to do this, most of which have nothing to do with anything transgender, but if someone does decide to play as the other gender for any type of transgender experiment, why should we be so judgemental, just play the **** game and have fun and stop trying to make other peoples decisions for them or legislate thier versions of right and wrong

Are you serious? More realistic. I hate to sound like a chauvinist, but more realism would be no women. Maybe one thief but that is about it. I say thief by the way, because they could help without having to fight.

Let's face it, this is roughly based on the past when women would not be allowed to fight. Maybe the races other then human were different, but I doubt it.

Play women because you like to check out her body, or you have some desire to role play as a woman. Please do us a favor and forget the realism.

By the way if you try hitting on me while you are roleplaying expect to get kicked from the group :-)

Greetings. I am new here and I don't know the cap. I have seen some players online and the highest one was lvl 14. I Hope that the cap is higher than this. If the cap is lvl 14, I don't think I will last long here. I was disappionted with the lvl 20 cap on nwn2. Even BG2 had a cap of lvl 40. What makes this game worth trying if I am to spend weeks or months just to attain lvl 14? Any response would be most welcome.

I have both male and female characters.. but I'll be honest. If I have to watch someones ass for 100's of hours, it might as well be female.

Besides... humans run like they had an accident in their pants
halflings run like the hunchback of nottre dame
dwarves come across as obese midgets with a mean streak.

warforged don't even HAVE ass

that leaves us with human, drow or elf females. That's probably why there are so many of them.

My experience, mostly with guys playing female characters is - in a mmo/ddo - it really doesn't matter at all unless they're actually trying to roleplay...and then the potential for creepiness exists.

For the regular in-person groups I used to play with - when a guy had a single female character (more or less as something different to try) - things tended to be fine - when one of the guys tended to always ONLY have female characters - and then they tried to be more female than the women that tried playing - sometimes that seemed a bit odd or creepy - especially when those individuals asserted that they didn't have certain private preferences.

These days I miss it all - haven't don't any in-person gaming in almost a decade.:(

In many years of playing MMOs, I have really only encountered one type of person for whom finding men playing females is a problem (and this is in regards to men playing female characters that try to claim to actually be female....and voice chat has stopped alot of this in the recent years).

That being the type of men (or boys as it may be), that tend to find themselves easily attached to people online and who either subconsciously or intentionally find some kind of attraction or personal emotion towards online women. It seems wierd to me, but it is not uncommon. They can often become quite hurt or even abusive when they find out someone is not who they think they are. However that is no one else's fault but their own.

I play these games to have fun, but have had to leave games or guilds because of men (or again boys) tend to find it necessary to become pushy about trying to get personal or are looking for a girlfriend. The annoyance and even on occasion unending harrassment gets really irritating. I have had this come up more than once even in DDO. Even once in the past (not DDO) I had one lesbian harassing me for a long time until I finally gave up and left the game.

Aside from that, most male players are great to play with, and I have no problems with them at all. Some will role play whatever gender they choose, some play females and dont role play it at all, either way is fine with me. But for me, I do get tired of being hit on while playing and people trying to meet me in real life from simply playing an online game. That part is the most irritating to me and begins to take away the fun of the game. If I wanted to find a date online I would be on an online dating site, not in DDO.

I play male and female chars. Heres a few things i noticed, maybe not so much in DDO, but i found more so in other online games (mainly in my everquest days)

Female characters tend to get alot more of free stuff/gifts.
and
female chars tend to get flirted with more... even to the point of harassment.

about 1/2 my characters are female. I use voice chat whenever there is someone in the group I know and when we do and especially difficult quest (or one on elite) in any scenario where typing would slow or impede my ability to react in a timely fashion. Oddly most people see the female character and assume Im a girl until I pop my voice on for a sec and show them otherwise.

I even got sexually harrassed by a guy who thought I was a woman. He got a double shocker as I told him I was a guy and then reported him. :)

Seeing that being a male or female character has no bearing on the characters abilities it really is only a matter of personal preference.

I have to say tho when I first started playing DDO I was surprised the first time a female toon responded in a deep male voice. But this was the first MMO I had ever played. It didn't take long for me to realize that there were more men behind the mask in female toons then vice-versa. The first set of toons I rolled up were all male but now it's probably about 50/50.

I've never experienced anyone "hitting" on any of my characters in game. Maybe they're all too ugly I dunno :D . But I tinkered with WOW since playing DDO and I tend to find alot more mature players on this side of the fence in comparison. Also the people here alot of us are old PnP players and are here because of our love of the Dungeon and Dragon game and its content.

I'd have to say from what I've seen in the year I've been playing this is most people in this game are here to enjoy the game and the community feel of D&D and could care less what your playing as long as your character does their part in the group and that's the way I hope it stays. Thats my 2 cp anyway.

I've always thought the same thing about the drow, so when I made my bard I made him as androgenous as possible. Not too hard with some of the hairstyles offered. The name?... ZiggyStardus T of course:D ! (I wish the name field was just one character longer)

Half the reason I make characters is for the names. Oddly enough, I think of more fun female names that aren't taken than male names. That is the only time I make a female character.

I have a couple of female toons picked that way because of the character concept I had when I made them. Personally I don't have any problems with men having female toons or vice versa, it's a game not a dating service.
