I am still fairly new to the game and noticed all the weapon material types( cold iron, flame touched, addy etc.) I was wondering if there is a weapon type that is a good alround type for adventuring for those of us who do not know what type weapon is required to hit every mob?? Thanks and cya in the game

Adamantine is good for general use because it has a higher Hardness rating and therefore takes less damage in combat. :)

There really isn't a "good weapon type" that will hit all mobs. Alot of the upper end mobs require a specific metal, or aligned weapon, in order to get passed their damage reduction.
A few things to keep in mind:
Constructs - Adamantine
Vampires - Silver
Byshek - Mind Flayers

Maybe I'm dense but 8ish months into the game I still get confused by this too. I find that although it doesn't do maximum damage all the time a good general weapon if you aren't sure what to use is Pure Good (or even better pure good plus any other metal/effect). pure good does a little extra (1D6) damage to everything except good creatures, and we don't fight many good creatures. It also bypasses some DR.
Here's a great reference to all the weapon types and what they work on:

Ah but pure good is not a metal type. As its been said adamanite is a great thing to have, You can hit those pesky constructs and the increase hardness is a god send!

not all mobs have DR/metal type. some mobs may require more than 1 property to bypass the DR, ie reavers/flensers/renders have DR/cold iron + good, pk hounds have DR/lawful, maruts have DR/chaotic, clay golems have DR/adamantine + blunt
while adamantine is cool for general use, it does not bypass all kinds of DR. the added damage from a pure good weapon actually helps if you are unable to bypass the DR. btw i do agree that adamantine of pure good is even better :D
PS: at higher lvls you have.... smiters :p
