I'm a lvl1 rogue doing "The Missing Ward". When I sneak into the basement and get near the girl in the cage, my feet start making red flashes when I walk. As I get farther from the cage area, they stop. It's probably happened before, but I notice it now because it's so dark in the basement. What do those flashes mean?

It happened again with a monster. an Ooze. So clearly, the flashes mean I'm being heard. Since Oozes seem to be immune to sneak, at least at my level.

Yep it means you are being detected. If you'll notice the flashes are 2 different colors. White means you are within range of being detected. Red means you are being detected. You'll notice mobs will come to investigate when you are getting red flashes. They might not know where you are but they know something is not right.

There are some monsters where "sneak" can not be applied properly. You can not sneak past undead and oozes at all since they appear to hone in on your life force or by some other sense. Try to sneak past a group of kobolds and then try to sneak past a spider and you will see what I mean.

Stealth-spec'd characters can sneak past undead. Perhaps not all undead, but it can be done. Spiders and oozes, though are not something I've snuck past, yet.

It takes a pretty good investment in Hide/Move Silent skills.

spiders have tremor sense and always detect you if you are in range, evenif you are invisible

Same with oozes.

There is/was a viddie posted up to YouTube of a team sneaking around various high-level mobs...

ah. Found it:
